Bush says Sudanese are negotiating in good faith
WASHINGTON, Apr 22, 2003 (AP) -- President Bush said Tuesday he is convinced that the Sudanese government is negotiating in good faith with rebel groups to end a two-decade-old civil war.
"Both sides have made significant progress negotiating a just and comprehensive peace for the people of Sudan," Bush said in a prepared statement that accompanied a report to Congress on the issue.
"There is still much work remaining," Bush added. "Sporadic military activities, primarily but not exclusively by the government, have hindered these efforts and must stop."
The conflict pits the Sudanese government against the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
Among the remaining obstacles are finding formulas for the sharing of power and wealth and for creating a judicial system that takes into account the needs of all regions.
Under the Sudan Peace Act, Bush is required to report on the peace process every six months.
A Sudanese Embassy statement welcomed Bush's report and said it will give momentum to the peace process.
Sudan's foreign minister, Mustafa Osman Ismail, reiterated his government's commitment to a peaceful resolution to the conflict, the embassy statement said.
