Strictly speaking the answer to your question is yes. Physical punishment may act as what is known as a negative reinforcer to the behaviour of drinking, so if each time someone drinks alcohol s/he is beaten up this may lead to the behaviour to stop. An example of a negative reinforcer we use in the treatment of alcoholism is a medication called Disulfiram, it renders people taking it to become very sensitive to alcohol, if a patient who is taking Disulfiram drank even a small amount of alcohol s/he will develop a severe reaction, so those who want to stop drinking and are not able to control themselves could take this medication and by knowing the risk involved if they drank alcohol while taking this medication this makes them stop drinking. This type of reinforcement is known as external reinforcements i.e. you are depending on external factors to change your behaviour. This is not as effective as internal factors such as motivation and willpower. For instance in the case of physical punishment one could easily avoid it by ensuring that he drinks away from the eyes of the police. As for Disulfiram one could easily stop taking the medication and resumes drinking. What truly work for alcoholism are psychosocial therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational and group therapies.
Needless to say corporal punishment is not used as treatment in any psychiatric practice.
