Rally in Washington D.C to mark 4th anniversary of Massacre of peaceful demonstrators in Port Sudan Jan.29, 2009 Mohamed Hassan Members of Beja Congress Party and their Sudanese sympathizers in the Washington Metropolitan area held a demonstration in front of the Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C.Thursday afternoon (Jan.29) to mark the fourth anniversary of the January 29, 2005 massacre in Port Sudan in which 14 innocent people were killed and over a hundred others were injured. They carried placards showing pictures of the martyrs and chanted slogans demanding the trial of those responsible for the heinous crime. It was said that a special security force brought from Khartoum to Port Sudan on that same day carried out the massacre. The Port Sudan demonstrators had assembled in preparation for a march to the State Governor’s office to demand equal distribution of power and resources, a halt to discriminatory practices in port jobs, and negotiation with Beja Congress Party as the sole, legitimate representative of the people in the Eastern region. Months later the Khartoum government did negotiate with the Beja Congress Party but those who committed the massacre have never been brought to justice. Commenting on the excessive force used against the peaceful demonstrators, the regime’s then minister of defense said the use of overwhelming force was necessary in order to protect the oil exporting installations located on the Red Sea coast.
