Regardless of where they lived, modern writers Could not escape being affected by the momentous events and developments of their time. Even before World War 1, some writers were concerned by the rapid Changes that were taking place and sensed that society Was becoming disconnected from the values and traditions of the past. Following the devastation caused by the war, these feelings developed into overwhelming sense of uncertainty, disjointedness, and disillusionment—emotions shared not only by writers but also by artists, philosophers, and many other people. Distrusting the attitudes and beliefs that had existed Before the war, many people embarked on a quest for new ideas. This quest produced a broad collection of artistic and literary Movements often referred to as Modernism. Although there were major differences among many writers associated with Modernism, they generally shared the desire to establish new literary approaches and techniques. In addition they typically sought to capture the essence of modern life in both the form and the content of their works. To reflect the disjointedness of the modern world, they often constructed their works out of fragments, omitting the expositions, transitions, resolutions, and explanations used in traditions literature. In poetry, abandoned traditions form in favor of free verse. In addition the themes of their work were usually implied, rather than directly states, creating a sense of uncertainty and forcing readers to draw their own conclusions. Among the most prominent Modernist writers are the American poet T.S. Eliot, the Irish novelist James Joyce, the German-speaking fiction writer Frans Kafka, and playwright Luigi Pirandello. In their works both Eliot and Kafka captured the bleakness, alienation, and despair often associated modern life. Influenced by recent psychological breakthroughs, Joyce tried to re-create the inner workings of the human mind. Finally, In his highly innovative plays, Pirandello attempted to convey the uncertain nature of reality.
