The indignity of childhood
In May 2005, representatives of the governments of Sudan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the UAE, together with UNICEF, agreed to establish a programme to rehabilitate boys forced to work as camel jockeys. Part of the plan required the UAE to list all children currently working in the country as camel jockeys. The list totaled 3,000 children, 2,800 of whom were under age 10.9 The agreement also required the UAE to return all camel jockeys to their countries of origin and to contribute financially to the rehabilitation programme. Since then, 150 children have been returned to Sudan from the UAE, only 10 in accordance with the agreed procedures. The UAE government had to provide solutions for those children whose families could not be found as they had not been allowed to contact their families. Aid centres were set up to trace the families, communicate with them and provide medical care for physical injuries, as well as psychiatric counselling to help the boys deal with the trauma.
