LEO KI'E KI'E (Falsetto singing) with Richard Ho'opi'i and Led Ka'apana Richard Ho'opi'i and Led Ka'apana are both masters of leo ki'e ki'e, Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners and Hawaiian music legends.
PBS Hawaii: What part does the falsetto style of singing play in Hawaiian music? HO'OPI'I: I think it's one of the most celebrated things in Hawaiian music. There are many young, artists coming up that want to learn how to get into falsetto singing, and it's for us, Led (Ka'apana) and myself, to continue to give them all the help we can in singing falsetto. It's can you talk like a man but sing like a lady. But it's a different quality of the voice. PBS Hawaii: What is the history of leo ki'e ki'e? HO'OPI'I: Male falsetto singing is unique to Hawaiian music. In the early times, there was a taboo against women entertaining. So it was up to the men to do all the singing, even the high parts. PBS Hawaii: How do you begin singing falsetto? HO'OPI'I: It takes a lot of practice, a lot of obedience. It's not just if you can sing high. It has to be in a way that is comfortable and satisfying to you. KA'APANA: I guess you gotta love it because everything has to come from within, gotta come natural, to make it come out right. HO'OPI'I: I began learning in grammar schools for the Hawaiiana programs. And, of course, every Sunday for church, where there was a tradition for each family to go up and sing in praise of God. Our family didn't have girls. So my brother Sol and I sang the high parts. Later we just continued, singing in the community with the voices we had, very high-pitched voices. We didn't know what we had, didn't know anything of the history of falsetto singing. Later on, people told us we should continue with our falsetto singing, and we said, "what's that?" Again, you gotta discipline yourself, you gotta get to that note up there, you gotta cross your knees, tighten them up, or tighten up your pants, whatever you gotta do. I just want to give back to the community, whoever wants to learn. I'm not a teacher, but we can sit down and talk and I can sing a few of songs. If they already have the voice, you really start from nothing and train your voice to do the things you want it to do. That's what we have been doing. We observe our kupuna and try to learn from what they do. That's the usual way, you have an interest, so you observe and pick up from the kupuna. One thing we always did when we were growing up was challenge ourselves to get better, If our kupuna could reach this high note, then we would try to go higher. And in trying to do that, you're voice is getting better and better until it becomes an automatic thing. PBS Hawaii: What makes it special for you to get together. KA'APANA: Good fun. The first time I heard of the Ho'opi'i Brothers singing falsetto was back in the 1970s. I was listening to them on the radio and I thought, I don't remember recording this album. (laughter) PBS Hawaii: What do you think of this NA MELE series? HO'OPI'I: I think it's one of the greatest things, what Stuart and Jay are doing in bringing back the traditional Hawaiian music to the people of today. More and more, we want to get the traditional arts out there for the youngsters, they are so talented. A lot of them are singing Reggae and stuff, and by just turning it back, they can learn where their native blood is at. And I speak not only for the Hawaiian people, but for all us here in Hawaii, for all the generations. They're all a part of us, and part of the legacy that carries down our traditions.
PBS Hawaii: Can you describe the falsetto tradition singing in Hawaiian music. JUNKER: Well it's an important tradition, and as you point out, there's a lot of variation in it. Essentially falsetto singing, or what is usually referred to in Hawaii as leo ki'e ki'e, what it's referred to today, is singing above your normal register. For a male that's your head voice versus your chest voice. And in Hawaii, it also emphasizes a lot of vocal ornaments that are traceable back to chant, like break in the register, that ha'iee, and elongating the vowels, and fluctuating in volume, loud, soft, and on and on. There are quite a few vocal ornaments from the traditional chant style. Then there's a little bit of the doo wop influence for anybody that grew up after the fifties. And of course himeni singing. Richard Ho'opi'i's style, if it could be easily characterized, because no style can ever be, no singer can ever be described, you gotta hear it, has a real sweet voice, a real sweet sound, very oriented toward pretty singing and very hymn influenced and choral singing. Led is more of a raucous falsetto singer, his singing is a party. And a little rougher, in terms of its timbre, or color, tone color. They're both wonderful falsetto singers. Of course Richard is probably more famous as a falsetto singer and not so much an instrumentalist. Led is probably better known as an instrumentalist but he's also a very fine singer. He says, usually when you hear him talk about it, that his mom, Tina Ka'apana, who was a very fine singer, is his main vocal influence. For Richard Ho'opi'i, he often says that Bill Lincoln, Uncle Bill Linclon, is one. And another is Aunty Genoa Keawe. So they kinda come from slightly different schools of singing. Led backed up a lot of falsetto singers when he was young, like David Chun and Joe Keawe and people like that. So he's very comfortable with falsetto, not only singing it but backing it up. I love to hear him backing up Richard. To me the two of them are just great together. PBS Hawaii: Hui Ohana was falsetto. JUNKER: All falsetto, yeah. With Led singing but also his cousin, Dennis Pavao, wonderful singer. You know Ned (Ka'apana) was in there too. A great band. Young plays old, back then too. They used to be young. That's hard for the young people today to realize, I guess. Just as it was hard for the generation in the sixties to picture Gabby when he was young. That's when the 78s come in handy. Or Aunty Alice Namakelua. What that must have been like when they were young. Now, Richard and Led both have talked about recently, they're kinda waking up and realizing they're at the age a lot of the people they respected when they were coming up, you know that's their age now. So they've kinda become that. So it's great to see Richard teaching.
