    SUDIA is governed by a voluntary board of directors with diverse background and expertise. A maximum of 13 directors may serve on the board at any given time, with each director serving a term of 3 years. Directors may serve for two consecutive terms after which they must end their service on the board. Directors who have successfully completed their full two year terms are honored by SUDIA as Fellows to the Board, where their expertise and resourcefulness may continue to be accessed by the organization.



    Ngbangu A., Derik Uya, (Chairperson) is the founder and managing director of KWOTO Cultural Center, a non-profit group that promotes and experiments with linkages between the performing arts and nation building within the context of a culturally diverse Sudan. Through the group's work with displaced communities, Derek has extensive knowledge on the implications and impact that displacement plays with regard to culture and psychological displacement. His work has taken him across a number of European and African capitals where he works to raise awareness of the richness of local cultures and their role in healing wounds and bridging ethnic divides. Over the years, he has made numerous contributions as an actor, director and writer to National Radio, Television and Theatre.

    Mengistu, Netsanet, (Vice Chair) has worked for the last thirty years in the development sector. She is currently the executive director of PROGYNST an indigenous Ethiopian organization serving women in Addis Ababa and Nazareth. She is also the General Manager of the micro-finance institution, Meklit. Ms. Mengistu also serves as the national project coordinator for the Ethiopia program of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Promotion of the Informal Sector. She has also worked as Vice Minister of Trade in the Ethiopian Government. During this period she served as Executive Director for the East African Constituency and as Governor representing Ethiopia at the Common fund for commodities.

    El-Mahdi Y., Abdel-Rahman (Secretary/Treasurer) founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Sudanese Development Initiative. With over 10 years of experience working in grass-roots and international development, Mr. El-Mahdi has a solid experience and expertise that covers Project Management, Research, Marketing and Development, Financial and Human Resource management, and proven fundraising skills. Since founding and establishing SUDIA in late 1995, he has been at the forefront in the development and growth of the organization.

    Eid A., Abdel Aati (Director) currently serving as Coordinator of the Sudan campaign to ban Landmines and as Chairperson of ROOTS, a Sudanese NGO specializing in rural development work in Abu Hamad Province, River Nile State of Northern Sudan. Mr. Abdel Aati specializes in the academic and professional fields of agriculture, education, health and community development and has extensive experience in the development and management of local community organizations and associations. Previously, he has served as Executive Director of the Sudan Council of Voluntary Associations (SCOVA). Mr. Eid holds a M.Sc. in Rural Development from Omdurman Islamic University.

    Hardister A., Roger (Director) currently serves as Regional Program Director, Near East Foundation - Eastern Mediterranean Region. Mr. Hardister has more than 25 years experience in fieldwork and direct service provision, program management, technical assistance, manpower development and training, administration/management and institution building in both urban and rural contexts. In his eighteen years in the Middle East he has served as private consultant in management development and community practice for agencies throughout the Middle East Region. Mr. Hardister has a MSW, Concentration in Organization and Community Development, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. BA Psychology/Sociology, UNC-CH.

    Khalil, Nagi (Director) serves as County Director for the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Yemen. Mr. Khalil has 10 years experience working in development and relief with ADRA/Sudan in various capacities, including project management, planning, evaluation, manpower recruitment, development and training, administration and management. He has been leading country offices since 1997 when he became the Country Director for ADRA in Liberia, Rwanda and Yemen where he moved in January 2005. Mr. Khalil has two Masters Degrees. The first is in International Development and Social Change from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in the USA and the 2nd is in Leadership and Ethics from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR. He also has a diploma in Social Development from Cody International Institute in Nova Scotia, Canada.

    Nelson, Kristina (Director) is a free-lance arts consultant currently working with the Egyptian Center for Culture and Art (ECCA). ECCA was founded in 2002 to record and present traditional music in Egypt as a vibrant and renewable cultural resource that bridges Mediterranean and sub-Saharan African cultures. ECCA encourages the return of this music to the critical role it has played in the daily life and imagination of the Egyptian people, countering the trend to isolate it from its original communities. She is also Manager for the Egyptian performance troupe, TUT. Dr. Nelson taught music at the University of Texas, Austin and was previously responsible for Ford Foundation arts and culture programming in the Middle East region, including the Sudan. She has a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology and Middle East studies from the University of California, Berkeley and is a member of the advisory boards of TRAMA (Traditional Music Archive, Institute of Asian and African Studies, Khartoum,). She has lived in the Middle East continuously since 1983.
