We would like to thank all of you who took the time to write to your MP and to the Home Office to prevent the deportation to Sudan of Abdulmajid Ismail. At 15.15 today, an hour before his flight, we got confirmation that Abdulmajid’s deportation to Khartoum was cancelled. This is a triumph for grassroots action and shows that together, we can lobby the Home Office with success. Well done!
Since the Northern Refugee Centre alerted Waging Peace to Abdulmajid’s case a week ago, we managed to secure a new lawyer for Abdulmajid, we collected evidence from the Darfuri community and Sudanese experts who confirmed his ethnicity and facilitated a judicial review which was filed at the High Court today.
The hundreds of emails that were sent to MPs and the Home Office on Abdulmajid’s behalf put sustained pressure on the Home Office, which meant it had to take into account the judicial review and cancel Abdulmajid’s flight. In coming days and weeks we will continue to work with Abdulmajid and his new lawyer and ensure that he makes a fresh claim for asylum and is released from detention.
In a similar case in July 2008 Waging Peace stopped Abubaker Yousef Mohammed, a Darfuri asylum seeker, from being deported to Khartoum and helped to overturn Home Office policy on returning Darfuris to Khartoum. After this removal was halted, Waging Peace ensured that Abubaker made a fresh claim and was released from detention.
While getting a judicial review through the High Court in time was key to halting Abdulmajid’s deportation today, the hundreds of emails sent by Waging Peace supporters and supporters from the NRC, JCC and Aegis Students helped build up sufficient pressure on the Home Office for them to look into this case as a matter of urgency.
Although we hope that the Home Office will cease attempting to deport Darfuris to Khartoum, we will always ensure that we are ready once again to intervene if needed.
