Babiker Badri Scientific Association for Women Studies

To conduct a program of democracy training and the expansion of women's rights. The Babiker Badri Association will conduct workshops on democratic concepts and good governance for journalists, political parties, youth and NGO activists; continue Publicationof its Women magazine; organize seminars on post-conflict collaboration and conduct research on violence against women.
Centre for Documentation and Advocacy (CDA)
$55,100*
To create awareness among the southern Sudanese on peace, human rights and good governance. CDA will continue publishing and distributing its monthly magazine, the South Sudan Post. The organization will also publish various peace agreements and international conventions, conduct workshops in the Upper Nile Region and establish a community resource center in Akobo County.
Community Development Center (CDC)
$32,372*
To raise human rights awareness and promote peace culture, tolerance and reconciliation in various communities in Upper Nile State. CDC activities will include investigation and documentation of human rights violations, provision of paralegal services for the disadvantaged, organization of civic education workshops on the Sudanese constitution and the Naivasha protocols and distribution of booklets on human rights issues.
The Environmentalists Society

To continue conflict mitigation in northern Darfur and expand its program to include the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile State. Program activities will include regional training workshops on post-conflict society, peace and environment forums for internally displaced persons and the production and distribution of teaching manuals on conflict resolution and peace building in Sudan.
Freedom Equality Peace Society (FEPS)
$30,000*
To build the capacity of youth for advocacy on democracy, conflict resolution and human rights. FEPS will organize a series of training-of-trainers workshops throughout Sudan targeting youth, nongovernmental and community based organizations. The workshops will address conflict resolution and peace, human rights and gender development, leadership skills and democracy, and facilitate a network of youth organizations in Sudan.
Khartoum Monitor (Grand Service Co.)
$20,000*
To support an independent press. The Khartoum Monitor will continue its Publicationand reporting on issues of concern to southern Sudan. Monitor topics include the war, peace process, NGO activities, economic development and health for its target audience of southern Sudanese and international communities in Sudan.
Mutawinat (Women Cooperating)
$36,200*
To empower Sudanese women by providing direct legal service. Mutawinat will offer legal aid to disadvantaged Sudanese women, taking on a target of 2,500 cases before the Sudanese courts in Khartoum and ten other cities. NED funds will also provide office rent, salaries and consultation enabling Mutawinat to reconstitute itself as a nongovernmental organization.
National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)
$140,634
To encourage political dialogue. NDI will conduct focus group research in southern Sudan that will gauge the southern Sudanese population's opinions and viewpoints and provide information on the southern perspective that has not been previously available on a variety of issues.

Nile Institution for Strategic Policy and Development Studies

To establish a think tank in Southern Sudan. The institution will conduct research on the Machakos Protocol and how to establish a democratic government; organize brainstorming workshops; and produce a summary of issues of concern and their future implications.
Sudan Council of Churches (SCC)

To enlist a team of American trainers from the Conflict Resolution, Research and Resource Institute and the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy to develop a training curriculum to advocate negotiation, collaborative planning and cooperative problem solving. SCC staff will be trained on the developed curriculum, field test the curricula and implement these skills through various projects.
The Sudan Monitor, published by the Sudan Human Rights Association, highlights refugee rights.
Sudan Human Rights Association (SHRA)
$46,840
To raise awareness of the plight of refugees in Sudan, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya and to sensitize refugees of their human rights. SHRA will monitor and document refugee situations while also giving refugees tools to help them recognize and protect their rights. SHRA will create a website, produce a quarterly magazine and write an annual country report.
Sudan Human Rights Organization
$100,000*
To promote human rights, Islamic justice and education reform. The Organization will conduct research on shari'a law; produce a journal; monitor human rights violations; provide legal aid services to internally displaced persons; organize training workshops for trade unionists, farmers, women and student leaders and produce an Islamic Justice Encyclopedia.
Sudan Self-Help Foundation
$19,838*
To raise public understanding of human rights, rule of law, peace building and socio-economic development. The Foundation will conduct extensive trainings for internally displaced persons and other disadvantaged communities on human rights and peace building, as well as numerous out-reach training programs targeted at internally displaced persons.
The Sudanese Study Center produces Sudanese Writings, an academic periodical that discusses political reform, peace building, and the role of democracy in Sudan.
Sudanese Studies Center
$60,000
To undertake a democracy and peace building project targeting youth, political party leaders, women and journalists. The Center will host a conference on education and conduct a program to research and monitor the problem of corruption in government ministries and the private sector. The Center will also conduct a survey to assess public perceptions of corruption and utilize the results to launch a public campaign against corruption.
United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP)
$50,000*
To raise the awareness of citizens of Darfur on human rights, democracy and good governance. The UNCFSP will open a field office and establish a Project Advisory Group to identify and access focus communities, and produce a comprehensive and detailed human rights report to serve as a guideline for the implementation of a series of workshops and focus group activities.
Voters Education Center
$40,000*
To address the great need for civic education to increase the chance for free and fair voting. The Center will establish four offices to hold public meetings and produce publications. The publications will explain the meaning of self-determination, the relationship between voting in a referendum and voting for political representatives and the responsibilities of a voter towards these democratic institutions.
