Badya Center for Integrated Development Services
$40,000
To strengthen the capacity of local communities in peace building. The Center will train youth and ex-combatants from transitional areas in reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction; organize a series of peace tournaments which will incorporate training in conflict resolution skills and human rights; and continue its "second chance education" for disadvantaged children. The Center will also develop theaters for peace building.
Grand Africa Media Service Company - The Khartoum Monitor
$20,000*
To continue the fight for democracy, respect for human rights, and freedom of press in Sudan. The Khartoum Monitor will set up an office in Juba and cover the transportation costs of ten correspondents throughout southern Sudan. Grand Africa will increase the Monitor's circulation from 3,500 to 7,000 per day and publish simultaneously in Juba and Khartoum.
Kwoto Cultural Center
$65,000
To promote a democratic culture through cultural awareness and grassroots participation. Kwoto will perform 85 shows in all regions of Sudan to display the richness of Sudanese culture and to highlight relevant issues such as displacement, immigration, peace and justice, human rights, diversity, and conflict resolution. Kwoto will also hold lectures and concerts, organize a lobbying workshop, and publish a book commemorating their tenth anniversary.
National Center for Peace and Development (NCPD)
$30,000
To raise awareness of democratic values through various training courses and public symposia. Course topics will include election management, good governance, political parties, the role of civil society, legal and judicial reform, administrative reform, human rights concepts, and conflict transformation. Symposia topics will include "The Role of Transparency in Development," and "Democracy Mainstreaming in the Education System."
Sudan Human Rights Organization (SHRO-Cairo)
$79,886*
To promote the implementation of peace and democratization in Sudan. SHRO-Cairo activities will include human rights monitoring, legal aid to the internally displaced, three issues of The Sudanese Human Rights Quarterly, training workshops, student associations, and a new research program on the role of media in the transitional period.
Sudan Inter-Religious Council (SIRC)
$25,000
To investigate and publicize violations of religious freedom. SIRC will hold forums for internally displaced persons to discuss their resettlement under the Sudan peace agreement. SIRC will conduct a survey of educational institutions and orphanages in Sudan to identify religious biases, hold a training workshop for Christian and Muslim youth on religious freedom, and produce its first annual report.
Sudan Self-Help Foundation
$40,000*
To promote peaceful coexistence and emphasize the importance of different cultures and values in peace building. The Foundation will conduct democracy and peace building trainers-of-trainers courses in Khartoum and Nyalla, Darfur. Participants will be drawn primarily from internally displaced persons camps and will be trained in human rights, conflict resolution, ethnicity, gender balance, good governance, and the role of civil society.
Sudanese Studies Center (SSC)
$62,400
To support a democratic transformation program. SSC will conduct a peaceful coexistence program as well as an electoral and political participation program by organizing symposiums, theater skits, lectures, and research presentations; and will produce materials for widespread distribution. SSC will continue to publish its quarterly journal, Kitabat (Sudanese Writings) as well as its annual Sudanese Strategic Report.
