    Badya Centre for Integrated Development
    $44,340 *
    To consolidate peace for the people of the Nuba Mountains. The Badya Centre will conduct training workshops on reconciliation, conflict resolution, and reconstruction skills. Badya will also continue to hold its annual peace tournament, which includes a soccer competition, as well as related programs such as orientation workshops and video shows on peace produced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

    Centre for Documentation and Advocacy (CDA)
    $56,700
    To support peace in Sudan through freedom of information and expression, tolerance, respect for human rights, and democratic governance. CDA will print South Sudan Post, a color-print monthly dedicated to issues pertaining to Southern Sudan. CDA will also expand its capacity as a professional media house while improving local/national journalism, provide civic education, and act as an advocate of democracy, human rights, and peace.

    Community Development Center (CDC)
    $49,149
    To improve the capacity of human rights activists in Upper Nile Sudan. CDC will hold training workshops and play a coordinating role to strengthen the capacity of local human rights structures and community-based organizations, working with them to conduct awareness campaigns and legal education, and conduct research on human rights issues, lobbying, and joint actions in collaboration with other NGOs and stakeholders.

    Cush Community Relief International (CCRI)
    $25,000*
    To promote youth participation in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). CCRI will organize a civic and vocational education program: Beyond the Guns: Youth Change Agents for Peace and Sustainable Development. As part of this program, CCRI will educate former youth combatants, host community workshops, and translate the CPA and other key human rights documents into the Nuer language and distribute them to schools and youth centers.

    Friends of Africa International (FAI)
    $25,530*
    To build the capacity of civil society groups in Darfur. In Banjul, Gambia, prior to the 40th meeting of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights, FAI in collaboration with the Darfur Relief and Documentation Center will host an intensive three-day conference on regional and international strategies used to promote and protect human rights.

    Gender Center for Research and Training
    $35,100
    To increase the role of women in the promotion of democracy. The Gender Center will produce a gender and democracy conceptual framework for Sudan, which will be incorporated into a training manual on gender mainstreaming. The Gender Center will also conduct a comprehensive survey on women's participation in political parties and use the findings to create a database of women involved in Sudan's political parties.

    Khartoum Monitor - Grand Africa Media Services Co. (Khartoum Monitor)
    $25,000*
    To promote north-south dialogue and disseminate information about the CPA. The Khartoum Monitor will be published in both English and Arabic with a weekly page devoted to issues of democracy, good governance, and human rights. The Khartoum Monitor currently has a daily circulation of 5,000 copies, which it hopes to increase to 9,000 in the coming year.

    Kuli Baila Organization
    $20,000
    To empower local stakeholders to promote a culture of democracy, human rights, and peaceful co-existence throughout Darfur. Kuli Baila will hold workshops on human rights, conflict resolution, and women's empowerment for chiefs and other leaders of various African and Arab Darfurian tribes. The trainings will empower participants to promote the ideas of democratization and equality on their own, and counter the sentiments of ethnic discrimination.

    Kwoto Cultural Center
    $65,000*
    To promote reconciliation, as well as an understanding of democracy and human rights, among Sudanese. Kwoto will perform 75 shows highlighting themes such as corruption, poverty, HIV/AIDS, human rights, conflict resolution, and displacement. Kwoto will also hold lectures and concerts, maintain and expand its library, and train other groups in order to improve their leadership capacity.

    Multi-Media Training Center (MMTC)
    $36,948
    To support a well-trained and professional media in Sudan, as part of providing the education and information for peace-building and democratic reconstruction in South Sudan. MMTC will run a training course for journalists, including classes on the basics of print and broadcast journalism, press-English, news-writing, features-writing, press law, and script writing for radio and television, among other topics.

    Mutawinat Benevolent Center
    $52,600*
    To offer direct legal aid to women and juveniles in Sudan and raise public awareness of women's legal and human rights. Mutawinat will continue to give direct legal assistance to women; hold regular training session to inform women in prisons about their rights; and conduct a campaign to raise public awareness about human rights and the Sudanese legal system.

    National Center for Peace and Development (NCPD)
    $60,000
    To support and increase awareness of democracy and its principles. NCPD will conduct four democracy training programs and a series of public symposia that will include courses on democracy building, national integrity, human rights, and conflict transformation and peace building. NCPD events comprise participants from northern political parties, ethnic groups, women, youth, civil society activists, policy makers, and academics.

    Regional Institute for the Development of Civil Society (RIDCS)
    $35,000*
    To provide a better understanding of identity and the cultural roots of the Sudanese conflict as the basis for moving towards a sustainable peace. RIDCS will hold a variety of meetings, workshops, seminars, and public lectures, as well as produce publications and other civic education materials aimed at changing perceptions about race and conflict in Sudan.

    Rise Development Organization
    $19,580
    To support a concerted process of re-integration for all Sudanese in the post-civil war period. Rise will establish a Center for Democratic Education in Juba, South Sudan, which will bring together local chiefs and community leaders. The Center will study ethnic conflict within local communities, research case studies, and train its Center participants on peace studies.

    Sudan Council of Churches (SCC)
    $22,600
    To provide access to civil society dialogue for rural Sudanese. SCC will produce radio programs on good governance and democracy, addressing specific issues such as gender roles, peace building, and landmines. SCC will produce 3,000 audio cassette tapes of selected radio programs to be distributed in rural areas. SCC will conduct interviews with politicians, intellectuals, and Christian and Muslim religious leaders.

    Sudan Human Rights Association (SHRA)
    $54,010*
    To enhance the protection of the human rights of Sudanese refugees. SHRA will visit refugee camps in Uganda, Congo, Kenya, and southern Sudan to assess the human rights conditions and availability of basic necessities for refugees, publish a report on its findings, provide legal services to refugees, and publish a quarterly magazine called The Refugee Monitor.

    Sudan Human Rights Organization - Cairo (SHRO-Cairo)
    $100,000*
    To advance the concern for human rights in Sudan, train civil society leaders, and establish an effective civil society-based national human rights umbrella to influence the democratic transition. SHRO-Cairo will conduct training workshops for young activists, provide support to other local human rights organizations, continue to publish a quarterly journal, provide legal aid to IDPs, travel to war-affected areas, and disseminate reports on human rights abuses.

    Sudan Inter-Religious Council (SIRC)
    $31,150
    To promote an open and broad dialogue on religion in Sudan. The SIRC, which is composed of an equal number of Muslim and Christian leaders, will organize seminars on the details and the meaning of religious clauses in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and answer questions from participants. A final report on the proceedings of the seminars will be completed and 1,000 copies will be published and distributed.

    Sudan Organization Against Torture (SOAT)
    $39,360*
    To increase public awareness of the CPA and the Bill of Rights. SOAT will publish a quarterly human rights magazine with contributions from activists, scholars, lawyers, and civic leaders as well as produce fifteen radio programs that discuss the Bill of Rights.

    Sudan Self-Help Foundation (SSF)
    $50,000
    To provide organizational development and democracy training to NGOs and community-based organizations (CBOs) in Southern Sudan. SSF will conduct training-of-trainers workshops on human rights, conflict resolution, women empowerment, and good governance and elections. Trainees will be selected from among the returnees, IDPs, or grassroots communities, and will include community leaders and chiefs, and leaders of youth, women's, and religious groups.

    Sudanese Organization for Non-Violence and Development (SONAD)
    $16,652*
    To promote nonviolent politics in Sudan. SONAD will primarily train students in its School of Democracy. Classes will cover issues such as principles of development, nonviolence, human rights education and the Sudanese constitution, gender and development, conflict resolution, good governance and democracy, ethnicity, and leadership.

    Sudanese Studies Center (SSC)
    $68,100
    To conduct a series of political, intellectual, and cultural activities and publish materials in recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of Sudan's independence. SSC will hold a symposium on "Sudanese Democratic Experiences," addressing issues such as the historical background of the multi-party system, democracy and development, and religion and democracy.

    Tapari Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (TMCS)
    $20,500
    To support peace in Sudan through human rights and conflict resolution training. TMCS will conduct workshops on democracy promotion, peace building skills, conflict resolution skills, human rights promotion, and gender balance and empowerment. Participants will represent a range of ethnic communities. They will return to their communities to impart the knowledge acquired in the training, forming a network to assist in maintaining peace and development.
