Obama wows Asheville crowd

ASHEVILLE – Sen. Barack Obama told 28,000 people gathered in and around Asheville High School Memorial Stadium that his proposals would ensure affordable health care for all Americans while Sen. John McCain’s plan would put health care further out of reach.
Speaking for 40 minutes while in Asheville for debate rehearsal Sunday afternoon, Obama sought to tie health care problems to the broader economic slowdown and the collapse of Wall Street titans.
Economic woes have helped Obama climb into a lead in national polls and a tie in North Carolina. But Obama said McCain wants to change the subject to “Swiftboat-style attacks on me.”
“They’d rather tear our campaign down than lift this country up,” he said. “That’s what you do when you’re out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time.”
The McCain campaign is seeking to spotlight Obama’s connections to unsavory Chicago characters, including William Ayers. Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin accused him of “palling around with terrorists” for having once traveled in the same political circles as Ayers, who admitted to setting bombs while with the Vietnam-era Weather Underground.
But Obama spent most of his time on health care, which hit home with voters like Becky Pitts, who works at Mission Hospitals.
“I’ve been a nurse for 40 years and have struggled with the way we mistreat people because we don’t provide them what we need,” said Pitts, of Asheville. “I think his plan is wonderful, especially compared to McCain’s.”
Health care
Obama said he would take on drug companies and reduce the price of prescription drugs, forbid discrimination against those with preexisting conditions, place a renewed focus on prevention through weight loss and smoking cessation programs, and reduce waste and inefficiency.
He promised accessible health care for all by the end of his first term, and said he would cover the $65 billion per year costs of such a program by reversing President Bush’s tax cuts for wealthy Americans. The country must reduce exploding health care costs to solve the economic crisis, Obama said, portraying health care as one of the “fundamentals of the economy” that McCain has said are strong.
He argued government intervention is needed to accomplish that goal, and said his opponent wants less regulation.
McCain “wants to deregulate the insurance industry, just like he fought to deregulate the banking industry. And we can all see how well that’s worked out,” Obama said.
The deregulation proposed by McCain would let people buy coverage from companies in other states, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said in a Sunday conference call with reporters that also spotlighted the Ayers connection.
Obama said that plan would let companies choose states where they can dodge mandates to cover things like mental health, contraception or cancer screenings.
McCain supported banking deregulation. But Graham said McCain also supported “legislation that would have brought this beast under control” by putting a tighter rein on lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Obama ended his remarks with a call to action.
“Asheville, I want to say to you, I will never back down, I will never stop fighting ... We are going to keep fighting until everyone in this country has health care.”
Waiting on line
Asheville police said the crowd numbered 22,000 inside the stadium and 6,000 more along the perimeter.
Those lucky enough to get inside arrived early in the morning.
The first four people in line, in fact, had arrived at 11 p.m. Saturday night after driving in from Murphy.
“It was pretty cold last night,” said Heather Hawkins, 20, who headed up the line along with husband Josh, 20, Josh’s brother, Jess Hawkins, 19, and friend Amanda Andrejek, 20. Most of those who spent the night came equipped with chairs, sleeping bags and heavy coats.
“This is making history,” Josh Hawkins said. “This is something you tell the grandkids about.”
Anthony and Teresa Green, of Asheville, showed up about 7:30 a.m.
“I’ve been more of an independent so I usually vote for the guy who’s affecting my table,” Anthony Green said. “I just feel a real difference with him.”
Green, who is African-American, believes there will be a number of voters who will not vote for Obama because of his race.
“We’ve come a long way since the Civil Rights (Movement) of the ‘60s. Dr. King would be very proud.”
Before the speech, Obama shot hoops in the Asheville High gymnasium with Kay Hagan, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy, insurance commissioner candidate Wayne Goodwin and other Democratic dignitaries, Goodwin said.
“I hope people will get inspired to participate in the election process going forward in any election, local, state,” Bellamy said. “The biggest thing is they don’t leave this moment without being engaged with our elected leaders.”
