(sol) By: Mohamed Elamin Abbas Alnahas (Writer/analyst)- Sami Muhy Al-Din al-Haj, a Sudanese national, was arrested by the US military while working for Aljazeera satellite channel (JSC) during the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, and detained in Guantanamo military base jail for four years without trial.
The Sudanese Journalists Union has launched a wide campaign for securing the release of cameraman of Aljazeera Sami Al-Haj, who has been detained by the American government at Guantanamu base four years ago.
The Sudanese Journalists Union announced at a press conference at its premises in Khartoum, with the participation of a number of jurists and media men, its rejection to continuation of the detention of Sami Al-Haj and condemned the torture practices he has been subjected to, urging the American authorities to release him immediately or to bring him before a fair trial.
The Union also called on the Sudanese government to intensify diplomatic efforts with the US administration to gain release of Sami Al-Haj. It also urged the regional and international human rights organizations to adopt the case of Sami Al-Haj.
Director of Khartoum International Centre for Human Rights Dr. Ahmed Al-Mufti affirmed that the UN Human Rights Commission had issued a resolution on Guantanamu detainees, considering what is taking place as a violation of the human rights and the principles of international humanitarian law.
Advocate Fathi Khalil, on his part, considered what happened to Sami Al-Haj as an abduction violating the international laws, as he was not a combatant and he was only performing his professional role.
Sami Al-Haj's lawyer, Clive Stafford-Smith said his client had suffered extreme physical and sexual abuse and religious persecution. Mr. Smith speaking to Aljazeera detailed how Sami Al-Haj was asked to spy for the US in exchange for citizenship and how the interrogators threatened his family, including his five years old son, if he did not comply, he said.
He added to Aljazeera "The US needs to wake up to the fact that the most effective counter-terrorism measure is the enforcement of human rights such as the freedom of the press, rather than attempting to muzzle such freedoms by persecuting members of media networks that it disagrees with."
According to Sami Al-Haj's lawyer, there are thus various conditions that will cause his release:
1. That the Sudanese government strongly asserts to the US that Sami should be released. I am glad to say that I met the Sudanese ambassador in London and he was very supportive, but Aljazeera must help secure this assistance.
2. That Aljazeera publicise everything that it can about Sami, including organising a spot once a week where his reports can go out to the world.
3. That Sami's friends and colleagues around the world help secure other support for him, to press for his release.

● He was born in Khartoum in 15 February 1969.
● Attained the Bachelor degree of Arts from India on 1993.
● Worked in united Arab of Emirates 1996.
● Joined Aljazeera satellite channel on 2000.
● Reached Afghanistan on October 2001 with Aljazeera satellite channel team to report the warfare.
● Arrested by Pakistani troops for 21 days
● Detained by the US army in Afghanistan on January 2002.
● Imprisoned at Guantanamu base on 13 June 2002.
● Married and had fife years old son.
