Chad 'launches Darfur air raids' Chad warplanes have bombed two villages in Sudan's Darfur province, leaving six people dead, according to the UN. The raids took place on Sunday near the West Darfur capital, Geneina - the second such strikes reported in a week.
The air strikes were reported a day after Chad's President Idris Deby said that he would send troops to destroy rebel Chadian bases in Darfur.
Sudan and Chad accuse each other of backing rebel groups, destabilising the region around their common border.
A Chad government spokesman has denied that its forces have crossed the border.
The head of the joint African Union-UN peacekeeping force said he was watching the escalating tension with "deep concern".
He said the situation could affect the deployment of an augmented peace force in Darfur.
The UN has already taken control of the 7,000-strong AU force but is awaiting reinforcements to bring it up to its planned strength of 26,000.
Sudan has been accused of blocking the full deployment of the force.
At least 200,000 people have died in the five-year conflict, which has led some 2.5 million people to flee their homes http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7175603.stm
