For the record, I deeply regret the way Benazir perished. Some people may claim it is a kind of rough justice for her past mistakes (and possibly even crimes) but I subscribe to the view that the rule of law is paramount - you are not guilty until proven so in a court of law. She did not deserve such a death
Until Pakistan has rule of law underpinned by a strong, independent judiciary, democracy cannot lay her roots. Sadly, Benazir did little to support the reinstatement of the Supreme Court and her desperate attempts to make a deal with a military dictator caused great consternation even within her own party
That she was not a democrat is evidenced by her "political will" which bequeaths the right to run the party to her husband, Asif Zardari, and implicitly to her son, Bilawel. Imagine Gordon Brown or David Cameron passing the leadership of their respective parties down to their next of kin! It is totally unthinkable in a democracy that a party leader "keeps it in the family"
Hence it was with some bemusement that I witnessed Bilawel declaring his mother saying "democracy is the best revenge". Surely, the immense irony could not have been lost on the Oxford law student? Benazir, even in her death, has shown her true feudal, dynastic colours. How did anyone expect she would bring effective democracy to Pakistan when she abjectly failed to do the same within her Party?
