وهذا هو خطاب توني ليون؛ قائد التحالف الديمقراطي؛ بعد زهور النتائج الاولية:
The foundation for a strong, positive alternative government
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Statement issued by: Tony Leon, Leader of the Official Opposition Thursday, April 15, 2004 Today the Democratic Alliance has earned the right to celebrate. We have achieved an historic result-one that lays the foundation for a strong, positive alternative government to the ANC in South Africa.
Our support has increased dramatically from the 1999 election. Then, we won 9,56 percent of the national vote, or 1 527 337 votes. Five years later, we have increased our support substantially. We project that we will add 500 000 votes to our national tally since five years ago. I am very grateful to the voters for their confidence.
In KwaZulu-Natal, we look set to form a government with the Inkatha Freedom Party, our partners in the Coalition for Change. In every single other province, we appear set to become the official opposition.
We look forward to the new DA parliamentary caucus. Our delegation will look far more like South Africa as a whole than it has at any time in our party`s history.
The voters have confirmed what we have said since the beginning of this election. There are only two major political forces in South Africa: the DA and its allies, and the ANC and its allies.
As we predicted, the voters have dealt a New National Party a fatal blow. They have been reduced to less than 2 percent nationwide. In the Western Cape they are hovering at around 10 percent. They sold out the voters, and the voters took their revenge.
Before the election, we said that the Independent Democrats would struggle to get more than 2 percent of the national vote. Indeed, it appears they have received even less. We wish them well in Parliament. They must now prove that they can represent the interests of their voters.
These results provide us with great hope for the future. But they also outline the challenges that lie ahead. Because this election is just a milestone on a longer, more important journey for us.
Our mission is to build an alternative to the ANC government. Not because we dislike the ANC; they are our political rivals, not our enemies. Indeed I am sure that our maturing democracy requires a sensible relationship between the government and the opposition. We believe that the people of South Africa will be better served in a democracy in which power changes hands from time to time, as it does in all the successful democracies in the world. We remain committed to this mission.
We also remain committed to our relationship with the IFP, our colleagues in the Coalition for Change. Together, we will govern KZN for all the people of that province and drive forward our agenda for positive change. By creating jobs, fighting crime, combating HIV/AIDS and lifting people out of poverty.
Our support in black communities has grown since 1999, but we still have much more work to do. Our major task in the future will be to improve our organisation on the ground so that we are better able to reach out and serve these communities. We need many more men and women of quality to help us address their interests.
I wish to extend a personal message of thanks to each and every DA member, employee and volunteer who helped us in our successful campaign. I wish to thank in particular those who worked so hard on Election Day-by canvassing, by working as party agents, by visiting polling stations and getting out the vote.
Finally, I also wish to thank each and every DA voter-all two-million-plus. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for standing up for real change in South Africa. Thank you for standing up for strong opposition and for a positive alternative to the ANC.
You have helped us achieve this historic milestone. We will honour our commitments to you, and work tirelessly to reward your faith in the DA. المرجع موقع التحالف الديمقراطي لجنوب افريقيا http://www.da.org.za
