Edward W. Said Forum

Mission Statement
The Edward W. Said Forum is an electronic network aimed at bringing those interested in the work and values of Edward W. Said in contact through an e-mail list. The mode of contact is through electronic messages, which highlight activities and post announcements related to Edward Said -- as an intellectual, critic, writer, and activist -- with the goal of promoting his legacy. The network headquarters is Cairo, Egypt; it has been initiated by volunteer effort of friends of Said and hosted by the American University in Cairo (AUC). The Forum has been launched on May 1st, 2004.
Activities and Aims
Edward W. Said Forum strives to: 1. Increase understanding of Said¹s work and ideas by posting recent articles related to him. 2. Disseminate knowledge concerning scholarship, symposiums, and conferences related to Said. 3. Plan collectively forums, publications, and similar activities to explore the work of Said.
Subscription
1. Interested persons, anywhere in the world, are welcome to subscribe to the Edward W. Said Forum by sending an e-mail to Ms. Alia Soliman (Post-M.A. Fellow in the English and Comparative Literature Department at AUC): [email protected] 2. Subscription is free of charge. Required subscription information includes name, address, nationality and profession. 3. Contributions from subscribers are welcome provided they are of serious nature and in keeping with the Mission Statement. 4. Our present technology allows only for messages in English or French (but not yet in Arabic). Reference to works on Said in other languages and scripts should be provided through transliteration of the title and of other relevant bibliographical material. 5. To avoid mail blockage, messages sent through the network should not exceed 100 kb. Larger messages will bounce back. However, if there is an important large text that exceeds 100 kb, it should be sent to the Said Network administration ([email protected]) and from there the moderator will send it in the form of a URL. 6. Any illegal or improper use of the e-mailing list will lead to permanent omission of the user from the subscription list. 7. To unsubscribe, an e-mail should be sent to [email protected] with UNSUBSCRIBE in the ³subject² line.
How Does the List Work?
This is not a chat network. It works by keeping everyone informed of activities related to Said that are planned, taking place, or have just taken place. Articles on Said could be posted and circulated or identified. This exchange of information should facilitate finding out about activities revolving around Said and contributing to them. A subscriber, for example, searching for a recorded lecture or a certain translation, can put the question on the Edward W. Said Forum e-mail list and one of the subscribers might provide a response. Once a message is sent to [email protected], all the list subscribers will receive it in their respective inboxes.

Quotations from Edward Said
³Remember the solidarity here and everywhere in Latin America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia, and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding. Why? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights.²
³I take criticism so seriously as to believe that, even in the midst of a battle in which one is unmistakably on one side against another, there should be criticism, because there must be critical consciousness if there are to be issues, problems, values, even lives to be fought for . . . Criticism must think of itself as life enhancing and constitutively opposed to every form of tyranny, domination, and abuse; its social goals are non-coercive knowledge produced in the interests of human freedom.²
