Free Suleiman Jamous
Dear Friends, We're writing to encourage you to sign (and forward widely) a petition to help free Suleiman Jamous, who's been held in detention in a U.N. hospital in Sudan for more than a year. For three years, Jamous served as humanitarian coordinator for the largest rebel movement in Darfur, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to hundreds of thousands of displaced Darfurians. In addition to helping to alleviate the dire humanitarian consequences of the Sudanese government's scorched-earth campaign in Darfur, he also worked tirelessly to bring abuses against civilians in Darfur to public attention, providing information to journalists and arranging for them to travel to Darfur. We spent time with Suleiman Jamous in Darfur while filming "Darfur Diaries" and he is featured prominently in both the "Darfur Diaries" film and book. According to Jan Pronk, former Special Representative to the Secretary General, "Suleiman Jamous fulfilled a crucial function as the SLM humanitarian coordinator…due to his work the lives of many people in the areas controlled by the rebel movements could be saved." Slovenian human rights envoy Tomo Kriznar, who traveled through Darfur in 2006, said that Jamous "inspired me more then any other Darfurian." Jamous has been trapped in a U.N. hospital in Kadugli, Kordofan, Sudan. The Sudanese government refuses to let him leave, and the United Nations seems to have acceded to his detention. Please take a moment to click on the link below and join us in signing the petition. It will take less than a minute of your time:
