Quote: Maroc’N Real with Hassan El Hadi | Morocco
Coming from diverse cultural backgrounds such as the Maghreb (the part of northwest Africa stretching from Morocco to Tunisia), Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, the musicians of Maroc’N Real combine to create an original and lively music.
In creating their music, they are inspired by other Moroccan groups such as Nass El Ghiwane and Izenzaren, who played a great part in the renewal of Moroccan popular music in the 1960s and 1970s by introducing modern instruments and blending traditional music from Berber and Gnawa cultures. In a similar manner, Maroc’N Real blend Gnawa and Berber music, rai, rumba and the blues (which itself has linkages with Gnawa music), with music from Arabia, Africa and Spain. The musicians are:
Hassan El Hadi (oud, banjo, vocals) comes from Marrakesh, Morocco where he was awarded the honour of Best Oud Player of 1994. Not only has he performed with many Middle Eastern and Asian music groups; he has also worked with bands ranging from western classical music to afro-Cuban rhythms.
Sabah Lachgar (vocals) is a self-taught singer from Morocco. Influenced by Arab and Western music, Sabah sings in four languages.
Aboulaye Koné (guitar, percussion), from Ivory Coast, has accompanied many stars from West Africa such as Amy Koita, Kandia Kouyaté, Sékou Bambino, and Amadou Ballaké.
Said Mesnaoui (hajhouj, percussion, vocals) is a renowned Gnawa musician for his skills on the hajhouj, a large Gnawa lute (or guembri).
Marie Saintonge (flute) is a world music flute player and composer. She plays professionally in various groups, their repertoire including Brazilian, African, Arabic, jazz, classical, pop, hip hop, lounge, electro and traditional folk music, as well as all Latin and Caribbean styles. She is preparing her second album named Hawazone.
Samuel Sebbag (percussion) is an expert in Middle Eastern percussion (darbuka, riq and other instruments).
With its fusion of cultures and mixture of rhythms, the music of Maroc’N Real will make you ance in a world of colors, festival and sunshine!
