Southern Sudan's New Airline Makes Historic Landing in Juba

The new airline of Southern Sudan, "Feder Airline" has landed on its home soil for the first time. According to Feder Airline manager, Captain David Martin, Juba will be the company's base of operations. "Juba is going to be the base of our operations and we will confine the operations to airports that meet the standards and the safety of the aircraft performance," he said. The airline will operate routes from Juba to Wau, Rumbek, Malakal, Khartoum, Entebbe, Nairobi, Addis Ababa and other international airports.
In addition, after two weeks of charter flights operation, Feder will start to make schedule flights to all states that have the capacity for Feder to land. Captain Martin stated that they explore this development in greater detail in the future, "The planes will continue to fly across all Southern Sudan and elsewhere as it provides direct flights. Thanks to Sudan Civil Aviation Authority for giving Feeder the licenses for legal operation."
Given the portfolio, the under-secretary said the ministry monitored the activities of Feder. "We had been in support of Feder and that was why we were accused of violating the CPA when Feder managers called it South Sudan Airline. But the CPA encourages private sector for the development of this country," the under- secretary said, adding that the ministry planned to develop the airports of Southern Sudan by improving their standards, beginning with extending Juba's runway to a 3.5km length. "Furthermore, Bor, Aweil, Warrap and Wau will all be built to the standards of Rumbek Airport which has the capacity for a C130 plane."
Parliament Speaker James Wani Igga, who officiated the occasion rejected the idea that it is the government's duty to develop the country. He made this statement after bearing witness to the fruits of private workers. "People must enter the private sector. 'No venture no gain'. If we do not enter the private sector, we will not develop. The government is not responsible for unemployment in Southern Sudan," Wani asserted.
Feder Airline's first idea came to Mathew, the minister of tourism in 1978, when he was told to buy his own aeroplane to transport tourists. He took up the idea and signed an agreement with Sunbird the suppliers of small planes. They needed a plane to transport tourists and to fly them to Nairobi. All this was done without government support. But the charges from the tourists enabled them to finance their activities until the then minister of finance, Said Abel, realized that the planes brought good revenues in hard currency. He gave his only small plane for them to operate to earn money; the plane was only used by the ministers until that point, for their visits to the states. In addition, after the elections of 1978 they bought a cheap Brazilian plane for half a million dollars with 18 seats and that was the beginning of Feeder Airlines- 'The Buffalo plane'.
The plane was named after the late hero Dr. John Garang as a sign of reverence for his greatness. Furthermore, Captain David explained the conditions and criteria for those who wish to join pilot's training. They should have sat for Sudan School certificate leaver; especially sciences students who took maths, physics, chemistry and geography are often selected. "The Sudan School certificate those days was very strong and now its standard is too low to train any of them. Now those who have beyond the Sudan School certificates are far better and having master the English language well, will be able to pass 70% of the 14 subjects which are taught in English," commented David. Most important of all was the medical test that will qualify one automatically with a class one medical certificate meaning that your body is healthier. However, he concluded that at the moment they don't yet have a scheme for training pilots
