Dears,
The troubles in the peace talks between Sudanese Vice president Ali Osman Mohamed Taha and the Chairman of the SPLM Dr John Grang seem to be provoked by the power straggle between the two old friend Taha and Al beshir.
A friend who asked not to be quoted told me yesterday: “Ali Osman Taha had in earlier discussions with Garang agreed on the principle of two armies. The SPLA to remain in the South and the present GoS army to confine itself 50 miles above southern boarders of 1956 instead of 13 parallel. The two forces to constitute a national army of 21,000; part of that army would be distributed in the South, National capital, and the three areas. The issues for further discussions were the (size, timing for deployment, and operational commands).”
That was understanding before the Defense Minister arrived in Naivasha.
A day after his arrival the tune for discussions changed people started to see hardening of positions. I think there is a clash between Omer Bhesir and Ali Taha on the approach to the two armies; of course the Minister of Defense is a man of Bhesir and he seems not going well with Ali Osman Taha.
”The Minister was also seen refusing orders from Ali Taha to seat on the discussions table, the translation from Arabic says 'Ali Osman to the Minister ... Sit brother. The Minister ... what? This is a table for politicians I am not one of them leave me alone' and he left the room...”
The Daily newspaper Asharq Alawsat said today that Al Beshir sent Defence Minister Major General Bakri Hassan Saleh to stop any military arrangements. The President and his peace Adviser Ghazi Salaheddine Atabani are convinced that Taha is not qualified to deal in military issues.
Alsharq Alawsat expected the failure of the negotiations and “the end” of political career of Ali Osman Mohamed Taha.
So as it has been said by Al Afendi in one of his articles do not believe that this government has a political agenda when it is negotiating with SPLM. Al Beshir has his own agenda and Taha has another one etc…….
Regards Note: This is not my article.
