Our martyr leader was strongly present at the hall of the African Cultural Center in West Philadelphia... He was seen in the teary eyes of the mourners, his voice was haunting the Mugharib prayers in their Dua'a to heaven to continue the peace vision and unity among all Sudanese...
We heard his voice in the wise words of Mr. Afwerke Yohanis, the Eritrean Consular in Philadelphia... in the passionate words of the young African filmmaker of the Lost Boys, Filmon mebrahatu.. ..
We heard his voice in the words of John Kidani, member of the newly established African and Caribbean Immigrants Commission of the City of Philadelphia... Mr. Kidani, one of the Eritrean liberation fighter and a citizen of Sudan by default as he introduces himself, stresses on the importance of continuing the vision of Garang that will bring peace to the whole region and not only Sudan...
Mr. Afwerke Wogayew, the president of the Ethiopian Community in Philadelphia and who was the first to speak from non-Sudanese orgs,invited all of us to firmly hold up the vision of Dr. Garnag of peace "unity of Sudan will bring peace to the whole region" he said....
Dr. Camilo Bustillo-Perez, a human rights lawyer and a long-time progressive activist within the immigrant communities in Columbia, Mexico and the US, gave a very moving speech on the role the martyr in developing the revolution's strategy to reach peace... he drew on the parallels between Garang and Che Guevara and how this impacted the success of the SPLM to reach victory in this 'short' period..
Mr. Ibrahim Hamid, representative of the Western Sudan Association in Philadelphia reiterated the words of Joseph Garang Deng, representative of the Southern Sudanese Association that only peace and unity among all Sudanese would show our real respect to the soul of Garang...
Ms. Lou Ann Merkle, Chair of the Darfur Alert Coalition, conveyed a strong message from this 30+ coalition umbrella of Sudanese and US orgs, calling for peace, unity and vigilance among Sudanese let the independent UN investigation work to mystify the crash incident and bring perpetrators, if any, to justice..
The floor was given to the community to share their feelings in this grave moment of sadness and loss... People from the different political rainbow sent the same message... Ms. Lulu teke spoke in broken Arabic as once Ethiopian refugee in Sudan and on behalf of all the refugees community in Sudan... tears in her eyes, she could not finish her words, and this was stronger than any words..
Despite the last minute change of venue, the audience turn out was very
impressive...

With these words from the Democratic Alliance Press release of 8/2 the event ended after 10pm...
