Thanks alJandaria for the post and thanks posters for the informative comments. It's been long time since I last seen al toub and al shulukh, and this post and the poster's photo brought up lovely memories.
The history and origin of the Sudanese Facial scars or al Shulukh has been a subject of debate among the Sudanese historians with no clear outcome. However, the two diferent schools of thoughts on this matters might have some truth in their assumptions. This custom might be dated back to the Kush kingdom - Kerma phase.....sometime before 3500 B.C. Defintely it's an indeginous tradition that evolved through history and influenced by many external and internal factors: religion, ecnomic status, social class...etc. Archaeological exavations revealed evidences of the facial scars attributed to both Ku####ic and Mereotic phases of the Nubian civilization. Ancient Egypt - The Two Lands - which originally formed by a group of Ku####es once inhabited Upper Egypt, had shown sign of this custom under discussion. Other Exavations in Southern Arabia uncovered statues with facial scars but dated to a later period. This might suggest the diffusion of the custom from the Nile to Arabia and not vise versa.
What this facial scars used to mean or serve is problematic at least at this time. However, they all - past and present - share one thing in common: the number of the scars....three in most cases. The number three as Yahia said might be explained in Christian context to mean The father, the son and the holy spirit or in other words the Trinity. This is partially true but not the whole truth as the custom dated back to thousands years before the Christ. The old world had known the trinity long beore Christianity as in Ancient Egypt, Nubia, Mesopotamia and Southern Arabia. These Trinity took difrent forms and names and Christianity took the term and definition from these old civilization.
In my opinion these facial scars used to serve as tribal markers and/or social classifiers. Nubian might be seen as one ethnic group that subdivided into smaller groups based on wealth, power and social status. Other groups who might not been Nubian ethnically but influenced and controlled by Nubians and Nubian culture might have adopted this cultural behavior or custom. Based on the difrence between these subgroups, the form and orientation of the facial scars differed as well.
The Arabs might have noticed the importance of this custom in distingusihing between the Nbian subgroups and eventually adopted it themselves after modifying it to dsitinguish their offsprings from the rest of the Nubian Society.
In conclusion this matter needs thorough investigation and systematic approach to clear the confusion....as the presence of the Arabs itself in Sudan is quesionable especially along the banks of the River Nile....and many scholars today believe in Arabization rather than Arab intermarriage.
