I am trying to complete some data to write about this very subject: el di7ik el sudani el yome!
I will be honest to let you know that I am not updated with the living drama in Sudan today. but as the comers from Sudan arrive, I get my share of listnening to this, reading about that, watching this. It is very unfair to judge what is going on now, when I don't have enough information.
But I will still share my "impression" and hope not to ruin or hurt positives.
A Joke is a produce of cultural, ecconomical and political life of the society.
At the individualist level, people laugh get ironic and sarcatric, when they are embarressed or they have a critical situation. It is a state of scaping the situation and get a psychological balance.
some people are just funny, they are witty, they have a funny explanation to daily life, so it is a human nature too.
Isn't that what some part of Drama-as a social cultural act-does?
Yes, but on the other hand a joke is the easiest dramatic form that people can "replay" their daily life through.
I said the easiest because it is verbal and not as other forms of drama are, e.g phyical, technical etc.
It's graph rises up and down according to pressure and stress. The more stessful life is, the more jokes society produces.
We have a complete situation here, jokes are getting more active and more pobular for the economical, political and social stresses are at the peak.
Joke is a very sharp weapon, it works both sides: positively and negatively:
Positively:
1/it works as a message of an opressed; individuals get moved by it and they never be the same they revolute agianst the opresser economically, politically or culturally.
It could change a whole system if it is well aimed such as "politically incorrect jokes" I mean what we define as against the political authority.
2/Negatively:
a/first it works as an outlet:
people got to say something when they are not allowed to have a say about certain subjects; could be because it is a taboo, forbidden talks. They calm down after giving a joke about such a subject away.
e.g ####### jokes; political jokes; and religious jokes.
b/"Discremnative Jokes"
This is a harmful message to certain social class : e.g the tribal jokes; jokes about gays, about women about people with disability. and that what I heard from those tapes, they critisize Hadandwa, Southerners, Ethoiopians, Nuba, the so-called 3arab el jazeera; shaigiya, danagla ...etc. It is a very dangerous message when poeple agree to exchange this kinds of jokes in a manner to put them down.
It shows how "3ainak lelfeel tat3an fi dullo" instead of aiming to the opresser, people shift their hatered to each other.
Some of these tribal jokes are healthy, when each tribe is competing in the same level of PRIDE, but it is shameful in case of stressed tribes such as: Hadandwa, Southerners and Falata, because they are already not getting thier full rights as citizens.
People naturally tend to make jokes about each other, but if the jokes works against the interest of minorities or an opressed class and in the mean time serves the interest of the majority or the authorized, then this joke is harmful and this society will need to be cured from a sickness.
Artisticly:
Jokes also, are not the final shape of drama.
but it replaces drama when the cultural life is declining.
It forms up to replace drama, it heats up and gets popular because there is lack of other dramatic cermonies in the society, like lack of Theatrical activities, lack of other forms of litreture, poetry or Hakawati, narrator, story teller or wannas 7akeem.
I believe this is happening now in Sudan. I think that the poetry is doing wonderful, but not reachable to everybody. Because the best poetry is the one that critisize the politicians and politics and it is not available to the ordinary person.
I guess, and this is only a guess, TV programs are so shallow and not satisfactory to the extend that people tempt to go to jokes tapes.
