Sudan is heading to be the champion of contradictions. Everyone is partially right (which imply partially wrong too). Some people lives better than euprope and US and some can't fullfil the basic needs for survival. I think I have a unique experience and I want to share it with you.
I spent 6.5 years in the 90s, out of the country, then I went back for 1.5 years, then again back to the immigration world since Jan 2001. I saw-lived the transformation in the landscape of opportunities in Sudan. Some proffesionals are making a good living in Sudan. I have a relative who left his wife and kids in the US and went to work in Sudan, and now he is making double what he was making in the US (Petroleum Ind.). These kind of opportunities are rare, but they exist. A neighbor who used to work in the ministry of Energy in the late 80s (when it was a decorative ministry), and was fired by the regime , is now making more than 7,000 US$ a month with the canadians, while enjoying being in Sudan.
But at the same time you see youg medical doctors who make barely 70,000 SP (aprox. 28$/month), and that includs long hours and impossible shifts. I taught at UofK and I had to pay form my own pocket for the basic needs to accomplish my task of teaching (I used to buy my own chocks, can you imagine). Another example, I met a guy in the Postal Service who has 23 years of experience and his basic salary was 23,000 SP (Aprox. 10 US$/Month)
On the personal level I enjoyed every moment in Sudan. I discovered how much I missed the simple things, and it made me appreciate them. I loved waking up on the Fridays and buying the newspapers, and drinking the coffee on a Bember on the corner of the street, talking to the neighbors and just being silly in Sudan. I describe it as "filling the tank" kind of experience.
