Dear Abu Sandra and Hamid Badawi Bashir I agree with you within that the religious parties there are secular democrtic elements. For instance, the Umma Party has always contained such elements, beginng with al-Mahjoub, Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil, Salah Abel Rhaman Ali Taha ect. However, these secular democratic elements have always failed to influence the basic policies of the Umma Party and their presence in the party has never helped in shaping those sectarian religious policies, particularly under the stewardship of al-Sadig al-Mahdi. These elements have been always ignored or marginalized by al-Sadig, and the party has been ruled by a succession of Mahdi offsprings, without any regard to qualifications of the Mahdi's grandsons and granddaughters. This is happening at the very moment in which we are in. Al-Sadig al-Mahdi is preparing his children to succeed him, no matter who joins the Umma Party. If you look at the other religous party the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), led by Mowalana al-Mirghani, the hegmony of the family is less visible because of the egalitarian nature of the party and open-mindedness of the Mowalana himself. Since the death of Dr. John, the new SPLM leadership has abandoned Mowlana. SPLM therefore should be encouraged to get reattached to Mowalana. The DUP is led by the Khatmiya sect and contains religious opportunists who are ready to change their coats according to how much the person in power can offer in terms of economic resources. However, the DUP is a party that can be won to the side of secular democrtic forces. Besides, the DUP, SCP and SPLM, there are the Ba'ath, the Arab Nationalists, the parties of the marginalized regions (the Nuba parties, the Beja Congress, the two factions of the SLM/A), the new organizations of the left, outside the SCP, such as "Hag", and above all, the unorganized secular democratic forces. These secular and democratic forces are huge and can win any electios, if they can agree on a minimum agenda and built around a body like the defunct NDA. They do not need Umma Party that has been unstable in having a clear vision due to the unstable character of its leader, al-Sadig al-Mahdi. He is bound to join NCP, NPC, sum-up as the NIF, the Justice and Equality (JEM) is essentially a wing of NPC, and the other religious groups like Ansar al-Sunna etc. The organization of the these secular splinter groups, with already organized parties such SCP, DUP, SPLM, is of vital importance for the unity of Sudan. As I have previously pointed out the success of the unity of Sudan depends on these forces. If the religous right parties win the elections in 2008, I myself will join those voting for separation in 2008. The people of the South ,including the SPLM and other southern parties, will never trust any unity under the religious right demogogues. NB: Abu Sandra and Hamid Bahir Badawi, your opinions please!
