International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women Marked in Kosovo

On the occasion of November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Office of the Kosovo Prime Minister opened its Gender Equality Office. The Office is located in the premises of the “Boro & Ramiz” Youth Centre in Pristina.
“The humanity as it is would not exist today without both men and women, and this principle is sacred and balanced. Throughout history, this balance was disturbed and the societies have been mostly unequal. Gender-based violence is one of the most radical manifestations of that misbalance. It is one of the gravest violations of human rights, which doesn’t recognize cultural, geographical boundaries or social status. There can be no healthy society where violence is present”, said Prime Minister Kosumi in his opening address.
“The violence against women doesn’t cause harm only to women, but it impacts negatively on all members of a family and the society in general. Only the society which doesn’t cultivate violence can progress in all spheres of social life,” he added.
Visare Gorani – Gashi, CEO of the newly established Office of Gender Equality, promoted the four booklets published by the Office: Law on Gender Equality, Regulation for Establishment and Internal Organizing of the Office for Gender Equality, Determinations and Gender Concepts and Description of Duties and Responsibilities of Institutional Mechanisms and Municipal Committees for Gender Equality. The publications were distributed to the women activists present at the launch of the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
She added that these booklets aim to inform the citizens and civil society organizations about the work of the Office, and encouraged women organizations to be partners of the Office of Gender Equality and in the effort to stop the violence against women in Kosovo.
Snezana Karadzic, representative of the Office at municipal level said that the democratic evolution in Kosovo started by the women and added that the violence against women is still present in all levels society and that women are suffering from official policies.
During the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence campaign, public debates, television programmes, art exhibitions will be organized by women organizations. Also, white ribbons will be distributed to the men as a sign of their pledge to not remain silent when faces with gender based violence.
