    ACTION SPEAKS BETTER

It certainly is heartless to value life against a sum of Dollars, no matter what figures the valuation may come to. It is only one of the misfortunes of reality, but never mind, as this happens to be the callous truth we live. Let us have a crack at the valuation of life versus money.

For a perfectly isolated person in an uninhabited island, just about an utter fictional state of affairs, life remains immeasurably dear. For a social being (friend, partner, sister, else), the value is a product is an infinite multiple, since it reproduces just as many times as the images in two opposing mirrors; each reciprocated transaction doubles the value on one end of the social bond, and generates more value at the other end, perpetually. For a parent, a further dimension adds to the complexity of the valuation. Yet, for a mother of two children, the value is certainly beyond the limits of what humble language could ever carry between the speaking beings. Starting from the last sentence, it would be easy to call back the words and write off the whole valuation manoeuvre, merely a redundant exercise. This leads straight to the point; to the old wisdom “action speaks better”.

My name is Khalid Ayes, a Sudanese doctor now living and working in the United Kingdom, since left the Sudan in 1991. I appreciate the astonishment of many of my old friends on seeing my name featuring in active life, after an extended absence. To their surprise I may add, that after more than fourteen years of work and life in England, I still assume I am somewhat missing or misplaced. Many of my friends and colleagues are also lost in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. Some, only a few, are still in the Sudan, sticking to their guns; lost or found I am not entirely sure.

I am an old friend of the extended and highly respected family of The Karibs’ and a lifetime close friend of Mohamed Khaleel, Solha’s brother. As Solha’s condition progressed to a point where a liver transplant became the only hope she may live, I obtained the relevant medical particulars and discussed them with my colleagues who work in the specialty of liver transplantation in the UK, in the cold and heartless language of medicine and surgery. There is, as I learned from them, strong reason to hope for a successful operation and favourable outcome in her case.

Like all those who felt touched by the ordeal of Solha and her family, I have been moved and disturbed. Among the many who expressed their concern about Solha’s life and health, I am genuinely worried of further delay, yet equally hopeful that collective action will be swift and adequate. And, looking up to the caring and committed ones who have participated actively, by contributing, fund-raising and by effort, I endeavour to be one. Here are my contact details:
