7th International Sudan Studies Conference 2006- Bergen- Call for abstracts
|
Call for Papers choose "Save Target As" Throughout most of its fifty years of independence, Sudan has faced continuous wars caused by a multitude of reasons ranging from religious and ethnic differences to economic marginalisation. As the current peace process may give hope to the South, the people of Darfur and Eastern Sudan continue to suffer. Addressing the historic root causes of the conflict is an ongoing process. The recently negotiated peace agreement for the South has far-reaching implications for the future. Sudanese and foreigners interested in Sudan are continually seeking ways to understand the issues involved, their complex relations, catalysts for improvement, and conditions for peaceful co-existence.
The organisers of the 7th International Sudan Studies Conference seek proposals that address various issues related to the quest for peace, stability, reconstruction and the identity of the peoples of Sudan in both contemporary and historical perspective. The role of an independent judicial system, individual liberties, democracy and free press in making and safeguarding peace are some of the themes the conference wishes to address.
Papers addressing issues such as the role of women, environment, education, health services, AIDS, history, archaeology, cultural diversity, Sudanese arts, Sudanese religions, Sudanese languages, and their interaction with peace and stability are especially welcome. Also papers addressing the role of the international community and donors in preserving peace and rebuilding Southern Sudan and other war-ravaged parts of the country are encouraged.
Papers are welcome from both Sudanese and non-Sudanese whether they are academics or non-academics.

The Fallacy of Sudan Arabism

Dear Kamal,
Thank you for stopping by in the post. I would be a great pleasure to meet you in Bergen if you can make it. The subject of your paper (The fallacy of Sudan Arabism) seems to be very interesting for this conference. You wrote:

You wanted to put the legacy of the Anglo-Egyptian and Turko-Egyptian Sudan to ruins with your paper and you expected them to let you do so?
I am looking forward to seeing you.

Dear Amira,
It is nice to know that you will be attending this conference. Prof. Ibrahim left to Cairo 3 days ago. He is a very nice and wise man. He told me about the round table with Prof. A.AL Gaffar.
I will try to post some photos from Bergen.
Thanks for the clarification you made to Bashasha
Dear Zaki,
Thanks for the info. It is really nice to know that friends form the board will be attending the conference.
Dear Nada, I couldn’t make to London in the summer, so you and Khalid should make it Bergen in the spring.
I am sure all of you will enjoy the city of Bergen very much. Bergen is a very nice city “ the most beautiful city in the world” as real Bergeners believe. As the years passed I have come to understand why they keep saying this.

Dear Adil Amin,
Thanks for you response and sorry of this late reply. I thought I already posted the following reply: Dear Adil, Most the academic meetings are announce in academic forums and institutions although many interested are not affiliated to such institutions. Members of Sudaneseonline.com should be aware of this fact and consequently should try to update us with what is going on.

Dear Nadus,
Thanks for the link. I believe there are many studies that deal with many issues that could help politicians in the policymaking. However, Sudanese politicians seem to be very reluctant to follow such studies. Instead, they actually do exactly the opposite of what these studies have concluded. I think our greatest challenge is not be to produce more studies, but to force these politicians to take them as guide, or at least not to contradict them. In this way, many will no more find it meaningless to use such efforts to produce what could be the salvation of our nation. I will come later to your post

Dear Dr Ayman
I am delighted to know that issues such as "role of women, environment, cultural diversity and their interaction with peace and stability are especailly welcome". As scuh important gatherings on Sudan had been frequently highjacked by Sudanese politicians, and as a result important topics such as cultural diversity, women and environment are either ignored or given very small space , it sounds quite positive that the said topics will be focused upon this time and be given more attention.
I will personally try to submit an abstract on a topic related to the significance of cultural diversity on peaceful co-existence in a new Sudan.
Your efforts are highly valued.

Dear Dr Zaki
Thank you for providing me with more valuable information in relation to attending the SSSUK annual meeting at SOAS on 24 September where the Bergen conference coordinator and a senior excutive of the host center will take part. I would love to be there and if possible to meet both in person. I am glad that complicated issues of our beloved country are highlighted by researchers and scholars of high calibour and that reputed platform such as Bergen will discuss issues of concern. I am glad to say again that it is quite an advantage to add this time topics of real importance such as women and cultural diversity and their relation to co-existence in a peaceful new Sudan.[/B

Re: 7th International Sudan Studies Conference 2006- Bergen- Call for abstracts (Re: aymen)

Thanks Aymen As funds are still being sourced, the only confirmed source of scholarships at the moment is those made available by SSSUK for postgraduates from Britain and Ireland. The organisers are keen to support Sudanese, mainly postgraduates, to present papers at the conference. The total number of scholarships will depend on the funds secured. Scholarships will only be given to people who are presenting papers and their papers are judged to be of exceptional quality by the peer review process. The recipients must be Sudanese resident in Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea or Egypt. Final decision on the scholarships will only be made after the full paper is received and reviewed. No funds will be provided on the basis of the abstracts alone. All those seeking funding must submit the full papers no later than 15 January 2006 (deadline for others is 15th February 2006). This is necessary to allow enough time for the peer review process and applying for visas.
Most scholarships will be for partial funding. The conference organisers will normally cover the cost of accommodation on bed and breakfast basis as well as the registration fees. Participants are expected to source their travel to Bergen and other expenses from other sources. Priority will be given to postgraduate students. Those who are interested to apply should visit the conference website regularly as scholarships will be announced there. Please visit www.sudan2006.org then follow the link “Scholarships”. Please do not send any request until the scholarships are announced as no application will be considered before the deadline as will be announced on the website.
Best of luck
