Asskouri
Many thanks for your input
To be quite honest with you there a lot to be desired about the NDA’s leadership and political posture – the multiple and unworkable strategies and the very incoherent leadership structure are all the very inadequate. The NDA, save the lofty ideals, is a rudderless political organization, estranged form its constituency, and without any immediate political prospects
I still believe that taking part in such an arrangement (revision process) without too much leverage will not result in any meaningful outcome. The Constitutional forum was the only venue to test the merit of all the previous statements/assurances about the SPLM’s commitments to the NDA and/or the NDA agenda being present in the deliberations. So far the outcome has been a total disaster
I see very little potential for success if the NDA does not deal with its leadership crisis and develops a clear strategy toward the SPLM vis-à-vis its NDA obligations and those it is pursuing under Naivasha – this is key to the transformation you mentioned to your response. Effectively the NDA must either secure more forwardness and cooperation or pursue its agenda and let the SPLM decide what to do – either option or perhaps both require better performance from the NDA, which takes us back to the issue of reform
On the Ummah Party – I believe they have an agenda exclusive to their own interests – it converges and diverges, at different times, from that of the NDA. The lethargy in the NDA’s political performance (when was the last time did you hear its internal or external Secretary Generals Speak or when did its President Speak to the issues rather grandstand about topics better suited for He*ads of States) such posture leaves a coalition suffering from poor cohesion very open to flanking maneuvers by better organized groups
Time is of the essence yes, but we better spend the time to make things stick. The Ingaz and the SPLM can, up to a point, drive the political process, but this one needs more people at the table with acceptable levels of representation and input. Pressure from the international community can be resisted if the case for sustaining the agreement is made. However, if the two only argue that they alone can deliver, then I guess that leaves the rest of us with very little room to support them
Hypothetically, by way of an alternative scenario, – given that changing the ratios was/is a taboo - the SPLM could have made an effort to put the draft before the NDA for a short discussion to make sure it was onboard what ever the outcome – here your suggestion of the Asmara Declaration and any other language could be argued and resolved. However, Dr. Mansour Khalid made it very clear that the process is merely to operationalize Naivasha and now Cdr. Arman’s comments, which all may prove true but were framed using very negative political language. Before that was the very disappointing analogy of Dr. Garang about the "ugly girl," which made sound it was the exclusive responsibility of the North to make unity a viable alternative
In the final analysis, in my opinion, current events are not the fault of any organization except those that have deliberately missed all the political signs – the NDA must reform or perish
Khalid
I welcome your comments (first post) without reservation. I think the relationship between the NDA and the SPLM is problematical on many levels and more needs to be done in addressing it along with the NDA’s own dilemmas
I also concur with your reasoning regarding the marginalization of the NDA – it has reduced itself to a talking forum, which often spoke incoherently or after the fact
The NDA, as you pointed out, is in need of very serious reform – its structures are extravagantly large and ineffective. It is estranged from its supposed grassroots because its lacks an effective leadership with a very clear and concise message that can be used to empower the mass movement
My only point of contention here is I, still, think all those excluded from the Constitutional process ought not to invest what little political capital they have left in a process that is basically closed. Better in my opinion, to put forward a counter draft and take the campaign to the Sudanese people. The goal here is not to introduce chaos or scuttle Naivasha but to address issues that transcend the combatants and affect the country as a whole. For this to take place we need a little more sunshine and less double-speak from the NDA organization and its respective political members
Murtada
You came offended, you left offended – somehow I don’t think it is entirely my problem
All the best
