جلسة مع الخاتم بالأمس في فيلادلفيا

    Activists and Friends of Khatim,
The Sudan National Rally (www.snrphiladelphia.net) held a memorial to commemorate the life of the late legendary progressive thinker, Khatim Adlan.
The memorial took place all day at the house of Mr. Abdalla Yousif and Ms. Ithar Abu-Taha, both are leaders in the Sudanese community of Philadelphia.
Despite the sorrows, tears, and sadness mourners managed to make the occasion more celebratory by focusing their bright memories and moments in encountering with this legendary person.

Here are some excerpts that I managed to record when I was at the memorial:
    Abdelaziz Marhoum:
I knew Khatim since the days of the University thru his friend Mohamed Hassan Mehaissi. He is/was one of the greatest critics of the 'political Islam' concept. However, he managed to keep the human relationship part with the advocates of this defunct project. I saw Khatim many times socializing in the U of K Faculty Club with Jaafar Sheikh Idreis, a leader within the NIF.

    Igbal Almardi:
Khatim was one of the key speakers assigned by the Party to help the election campaign of Nugud, the Secretary General of CPS during the election of 1986. He was very eloquent in addressing the most complicated issues. That was the time when I knew Khatim for the first time. I always admired him even after he left the party, and this was the feeling of many who did not leave with him.

    Abdalla Yousif:
My personal encounter with Khatim began very recently when the SNR assigned me the logistic of his invitation and travel to Philadelphia in Feb 2005. He did not hesitate to criticize me when I made a mistake in his itinerary.

    Ali Dinar:
It was the firs time to meet with him when he was our keynote speaker during the SNR event of last Feb. The internet communication revolution made it possible for him to reach out to a large audience. As a politician, Khatim distinguished himself with honesty that many lack it.
It was very useful for us in the SNR to know the personal side of his character.

    Siddiq A. Hadi:
Khatim was known to me since I was in the Elementary school as one of the best students academically in our area in Gezira. Also became well known in the village because he was one of the first activists who faced political arrest. His well-developed political thinking made him to advance to higher leadership positions in the Sudanese Communist party when he was relatively very young. After he resigned from the Party, he introduced himself in a very appealing way that brought over many to his new political organization.

    Aida Abulgassim:
I met with Khatim first in Dec. 1985 in the New Year party at Suleiman Khidder house in Saggana. We, a group of friends, used to make our written predictions of the coming year and keep it safe until the next New Year party. We asked Khatim, as our guest, to open the envelope and read the predictions, and pick the best one. Khatim picked mine as the closest one to reality because I predicted the year before that a popular revolution would erupt in Sudan
I was attracted like many of my generation to Khatim speeches. His latest lecture in Philadelphia was so touching and moving because the way he elaborated the issue of peace in Sudan
His visit to my house was very blessing to my sick daughter. It brought tears into my eyes.

    Abdrahman Bakash:
Khatim was supposed to get appointed as assistant professor according to the University regulations since he was the top of his class. The Dean of the School then made an extraordinary decree that year to prevent the appointment of Khatim. Apparently the Dean got instruction from the Muslim Brothers Party to not give a chance to this brilliant researcher to do more research and expose the defunct ideology of this fanatic party. The name of that Dean was Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, the current leader of ruling fanatic party of Bashir.

    Abdalla Braima:
I mainly knew about Khatim after his split and leaving the Sudanese Communist Party, and thru the pamphlets and publications of his new party distributed by Aida in Philadelphia. I was deeply touched by his in-depth analysis of his writings. He is a big loss to the enlightment movement in Sudan.

    Omer Backri:
Khatim was a very courageous thinker. When he believed that there were something wrong with the adopted theory of his party he immediately expressed it. Because of his honesty he was a much respected leader within the Party, and when he left many has left with him especially within the student movement. There were some attempts to distort his image because he left the Communist Party but this was not on a large scale like that happened in the past against Omer Mostafa Almakki. I believe Khatim because of his distinguished character succeeded in reforming the Party in this regard (i.e. character assassination).

    Mohamed Elgadi:
As part of the Tahaluf Democrati (Democratic Alliance) in Khartoum Talata I was assigned to, like many other members, body-guard leading cadre, including Khatim, during the mass rallies and public events. This assignment did not go without a hard price to pay when I was arrested in 1992. The security scumbags of the Citibank Ghost House assumed that I should have known his hiding place and the other cadre of the Party. Apparently he had read my testimony somewhere and knew about this. He always spoke with admiration and respect on those ‘foot soldiers’ who gave the Party safe havens. Another encounter was when I met with him in 1997 in London to request his intervention in a specific way to support the emerging forum of Darb Alintifada (DA), which originally initiated by group of leftists who did not accept his invitation to join HAQ. Khatim did not hesitate to give his support to the fledging experience of DA by refusing to let it a place to attack the Communist Party.

    Izzeldin Bakhit:
It’s a great irony that a person like Khatim who spent all his life for the Sudan ends up dying in exile. I feel deeply hurt by his untimely departure and loss.

I could not follow and write-in all reflections shared during this event with Khatim Adlan.
An initiative from Abdelaziz was agreed upon by the SNR to participate in the fundraise campaign to support his family.
