Dozens are arrested as Sudan regime gags its biggest
critic opposition leader

Sudan's regime moved against its foremost domestic
opponent yesterday when Sadiq al-Mahdi, the last
civilian prime minister, was banned from addressing
political rallies and security forces raided his
headquarters.
Dozens of officials working for Mr Mahdi's Umma party,
Sudan's largest opposition movement, were arrested and
Umma was barred from all political activity.
Mr Mahdi, 69, is the great-grandson of The Mahdi, who
destroyed Khartoum and killed Britain's most famous
Victorian soldier, Gen Charles Gordon, in 1885.
The steps taken against him are thought to be linked
to his frequent criticism of President Omar
al-Bashir's regime.
He publicly blamed the government's "misguided
policies" for creating the crisis in Darfur, where a
brutal conflict with black African rebels has killed
at least 180,000 people and forced two million into
squalid refugee camps.
Moreover, Mr Mahdi called on the regime to abide by
all United Nations resolutions on Darfur.
He caused particular offence by saying that the
government should co-operate with the International
Criminal Court in The Hague.
A sealed list of 51 people, all suspected of carrying
out atrocities in Darfur, was delivered to this court
on Tuesday.
Mr Bashir immediately pledged that no Sudanese citizen
would be handed over to a foreign court and rallies
supporting this stance were held across the country.
By opposing the president on this issue, Mr Mahdi
might have taken his public defiance one step too far
and triggered the latest ban.
His party also planned to hold rallies celebrating the
anniversary of the downfall of Sudan's previous
military regime and the return to civilian rule.
Mr Mahdi was overthrown in a military coup led by Mr
Bashir 16 years ago. He spent seven years in prison
before fleeing into exile in 1996
