Africa lost a thought leader - Prof. Ali Abdelgadir Ali
Dear colleagues,
With deep sadness and sorrow we received last night the news about the passing away of Prof. Ali Abdelgadir Ali, a well-known and distinguished pro-African thought leader. Prof. Ali taught economics at Khartoum University and Gezira University in Sudan before joining the Arab Planning Institute in Kuwait. He was the Director of the Economic and Social Policy Division of ECA. Among other contributions to ECA work as a Think Tank, he led the preparation and publication of highly influential editions of the Economic Report on Africa, most prominenetly ERA 1999 that articulated the 7 per cent growth rate required for Africa to achieve the MDGs besides other requirements that represented Africa’s position on the MDGs, a position that was unfortunately not adequately reflected in the final MDG/Millennium declaration. He resigned from ECA when Senior management declined to publish ERA 2000 because of what they considered “too extreme pro-African positions and views”. Nevertheless, he remained a friend and supporter of ECA and contributed to many ECA publications and workshops thereafter.
Prof. Ali published extensively on issues of economic and social development and governance in Africa. He was one of the organizers and contributors to the 1983 Khartoum Conference on “Development with a human face” that vigorously challenged the classical Structural Adjustment Programmes imposed on many African countries in the 1970s and 1980s. He also contributed immensely to AERC work and Panels on macroeconomics and poverty, helping shape the minds and interests of many young African economists (including myself at that time) . Prof. Ali will be immensely missed by his friends, former colleagues and students. I am sure some of you remember him as a very vocal, outspoken, generous and sociable person with a remarkable sense of humour.
May his soul rest in peace and the Lord accept him in heaven. Warm condolences to his family and friends and our beloved continent.
