Quote: Statement of Research Interest Siddig Elghali Ph.D., MBA, MAFM/CFA While facing rapid economic growth, a forecasted 100% population growth by 2050, and a need to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions globally, Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries continue to be criticized for failing to utilize Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) energy resources efficiently. In the past decades, the growing imminent energy supply challenges have required strategists to consider investing in alternate and more viable energy resources as non-renewable energy resources may not meet the demands domestically, globally, or environmentally. One of which is renewable energy (RE) sources, which have the potential to provide MENA countries with sustainable and clean electricity for centuries to come. Minimal FDI and a lack of energy investment policies have resulted in the inadequacy to meet the total primary RE production's global and domestic energy growth needs. Thus, further study has been called for in considering FDI's in novel political and economic reform initiatives to boost RE production in regions rich with RE resources, contribute to ecological stability, increase the energy supply, and encourage trade openness. Without this study, energy and investment strategists may undertake misguided and misleading policies. Current Research My dissertation entitled, "Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Energy Supply in the Middle East and North Africa: A Correlational Study," draws on over thirty-six months of research utilizing multiple sources, such as the International Energy Agency, Foreign Direct Investment in the World Bank, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, government officials, energy security, members of the international community, and ordinary citizens in MENA countries. The study covers the MENA energy security strategies and regional integration policies. It also includes energy investment, strategic nuclear power plant investment, transition to renewables using natural gas and nuclear energy, integration of renewable electricity grids, and energy start-up costs. This quantitative correlational study aimed to utilize FDI to calculate the MENA region's total primary energy supply requirements between 1971 and 2013. The study was conducted using a sample size of 43 years of energy supply resources and foreign direct investment, counting the years that FDI was available. It utilizes an analytic construct to assess the changes in the FDI and energy supply integration, a system that has been largely lacking in the MENA region since independence, particularly in the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC). A nonlinear regression analysis was performed to test the foreign direct investment and energy supply predictor variables with the control variables related to renewable energy resources, fossil fuels, natural gas, nuclear energy, and CO2 emissions. The criterion variables were total primary energy supply from four sources: fossil fuels, natural gas, renewables and waste, and electricity. The study outlines steps in deciding whether the selected FDI was consistent with energy data, suggesting the need for additional FDI and energy supply investigation. The results of my research contend that the interplay between FDI, fossil fuels, renewables and waste, electricity, and other specific sources lead to different types of energy supply and energy development integration policies. My position is that the energy integration policies should focus on obtaining more FDI inflows and outflows, enforce accountability, transparency, and inclusive participation, and develop energy and investment organizational capacity integration to bring about actual change in the MENA region. My research seeks to facilitate more concrete discussions in the literature on Foreign Direct Investment and Energy Supply in the Middle East and North Africa. It supports important scholarly and policymakers' debates about these critical issues, particularly for the MENA people whose fates rest on the success of energy investment integration, political and economic policy reform programs. Future Prospective Research Longterm, I plan to transform my dissertation into a more comprehensive book that focuses on the role of the FDI and energy supply integration in fostering change in MENA energy investment, political and fiscal policy outcomes. To do so, I aim to obtain funding from the MENA Research Centers and the GCC to expand my research study and further test my argument on the development and integration of FDI and energy supply. To my knowledge, none of the FDI inflows and outflows are being implemented in the MENA region. Hence, I need to further my research on Foreign Direct Investment and Energy Supply in the Middle East and North Africa to include opinions of key finance and energy policymakers and other new quantitative measurements of integration energy investment to support policymakers. I am also interested in extending my energy integration research to other parts of Africa, connecting the energy grids from GCC to East Africa through Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eretria, where financial integration and development are also currently being executed. To begin this research, I would like to explore and publish data that links between FDI inflows and outflows, financial capital, and policymaking, same as what has been done in Europe. I am also interested in expanding and publishing research that will cover renewable energy and energy integration between North Africa and West Africa.
