Nasr Mohammed Argumentative Essay 6/25/2015 Why One Should Consider Not Eating Pork Eating meat is a part of our daily life. Many people eat different kinds of meat as well as pork. However, many religions instruct their people about not eating pork, because pork is considered an unclean and dirty meat. There are many scientific claims about this topic. Pigs –the only source of pork - not only eat bugs, insects, and whatever is leftover but also, they eat their own feces and they eat their dead young. There are several reasons why anyone should consider not eating pork. First, pork is a toxic meat; second, pork is a source of many diseases and; third, pigs are raised on a factory farm. First, pork has the most toxins of any other meat in the world. One may be skeptical about how much toxin is found in pork and how seriously affects our bodies. However, pigs digest whatever they eat very quickly, just about four hours (Axe). On the other hand, cows take about twenty four hours to digest what they eat. Animals (including humans) get rid of excess toxins as well as other components of the food eaten that could be dangerous to health. In pigs more toxins are stored in their fatty tissues to be ready for our consumption. Also, pigs don’t have any sweat glands which are a tool the body uses to get rid of toxins. This leaves more toxins in the pig’s body. Everyone is responsible for what kind of meat is put in his or her mouth. If we eat more pork, that means more toxins in our bodies and no one of us need more toxins in our systems Second, pork represents a major source of many diseases. One may argue that pork represents a vital part of American meat and that, pork is one of the most consumed meats in the world. However, according to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), China is number one in producing pork in the world. More than 100 viruses come to the United States each year from China through pigs (Axe). One is probably familiar with H1N1, known as “the swine flu.” Also comes to humans from pigs (Axe). Also pigs carry many kinds of parasites in their bodies and meat, which makes undercooked pork very dangerous. Furthermore, Trichinella “pork worm” is one of the most widespread parasites in the whole world. It has the potential to cause some very serious health concerns. Many of the bacteria found in pork were actually resistant to multiple antibiotics, which makes treatment so difficult. Third, pigs are raised on factory farms. Ninety seven percent of all pigs in the United States today are raised on factory farms (Ketler). This means that these pigs will never get to run on grass, breathe fresh air, or play in the sun. They live in huge warehouses and are fed food consisting of drugs and antibiotics to keep them alive and to encourage rapid growth without caring too much about their health. Also, about a quarter of the pigs suffer from mange, an extremely itchy painful rash that won't go away until they come to slaughter. Finally, pork is a very toxin meat. Pigs digest whatever they eat very quickly. They don’t have sweat glands to purify themselves from toxins. Also, pigs carry a lot of diseases that harm our body. In addition, pigs are raised in very bad conditions on a factory farm. They don’t have a chance to go outside to breathe fresh air. They fed antibiotics and chemicals which make the meat produced from it contaminated with many viruses and parasites. Whatever one chooses to eat is up to the individual. But remember to be safe is better than to be sorry.
