    PART 2 OF 3

Doctors and Engineers for Disease Control

DEFDC Forum: joint effort to combat disease in the Sudan

    Vol 1, issue 1
    . May-August 2020

United to Help our Sudan: When Medicine Meets Engineering!

It is hard to think of a time more pressing for our country than the current climate of fear and uncertainty because of potential viral epidemics, covid-19 included.
For the experts in the medical community (physicians, ICU specialists, life support experts, virologists, nurses, among others the challenge is great. In the UK where
this Forum was born, the Sudanese medical community, indeed many people in Sudan have mourned a number of medics who died from or with Covid-19 [1]. Some of the deceased passed away in distressing conditions in the line of duty.

Although the exact number of deaths among doctors is understood to be precisely and promptly compiled, no such provision applies to other categories of medical workers [2].
The fate of many nurses, at least during the first week of the epidemic, and not just in UK hospitals, but also in care homes up and down the country remains little understood [3].

The loss of life is not the only dimension to this virus – make no mistake. With every day that passes whole communities are decimated. A chilling observation is stated: if some advanced industrialised countries have been found wonting and vulnerable to a disease that experts claim as containable [4],
third world countries like Sudan are even more vulnerable. The social and economic cost will be far worse. It is for this reason this
proposed meeting of doctors and engineers is called: to provide a means to collect and record
reliable data, organise tasks, plan and deploy resources and systems
to help our people in their hour of need. We cannot fail.

    NOTE Re [3]:
"We haven’t even counted the nurses," Donna Kinnair, ibid. The full quote from Mrs Kinnair (which I hadn't provided at the time, though I had indeed watched the BBC video), was , “We haven’t even counted the nurses yet, because I’ve been asking for the stats on nurses that are ill.” It is interesting to affirm that the BBC has ‘doctored’ that part of the footage by uploading incomplete version of the video, uploaded to the BBC’s own’ youtube channel. I was there, I watched it. The BBC made it look as if what they uploaed was the entire footage, even though it clearly was NOT. I had to search other videos to locate that video, having been alerted to the exchange in UK papers, the day after the interview. The BBC have cut off a substantial part of the BBC Question Time recording. Worth noting is that Matt Hancock, the UK Health Secretary, clearly annoyed shut Donna Kinnair down by saying, ‘We will sort it out’. Fiona Bruce, the BBC presenter did ask Kinnair to repeat what she said, but, miraculously failed to press Matt Hancock on the issue. And as we said, that entire exchange was culled from the video footage, leaving BBC with a serious allegation to answer: misleading the public.
