Dear Nassr and Abdelrahman
I am delighted that I have attracted your wrath, particularly of the latter. Mr. Abdelrahman accuses me of ignorance. Abdelrahman says he has never seen or read the al-Mirghani-Garang Peace Agreement 1988. Even if we assume Mr. Abdelrahman was not born by 1988, he would now be 18 years old, and must have come accross the text of the said agreement. It was published in all the Sudanese newspaapers at the time; it was explained in political rallies and academic symposiums; it was discussed in the Constituent Assembly in December 1988, where it was voted down by both the Umma Party and the National Islamic Front members of the Constituent Assembly. If you are interested to read it you can find it published as an annex in the Dr. Mansour Khalid's book, titled (Junub al-Sudan fi al-Makhiela al-Arabiah, pp 162-163). Now, Mr. Abdelrahman, let me ask you this pertinent question: Who is ignorant, you or me, who, by your own admission, has yet to read this important part of our political history? It is not good to accuse people of ignorance when you live in your own ignorance. You know what, emotional love for a political figure like al-Saddig al-Mahdi is different from the facts of history. Before making wild judgements, you should take history into account.
The other issue I want to briefly discussed is the claim that the Umma Party is the party of the majority. This is true when we take the elections of 1986. Although the Umma Party did not win the overall majority, it was the largest party in the Constituent Assembly (100 members). Since the elections of 1986, twenty years have passed by, and there had been no elections since then. Twenty years is a long period for changes to take effect on the ground and for the political map to be redrawn. It is unscientific to rely on figures that were a result of elections held twenty years ago. Elections have to be held in order for the Umma Party to convince us that it is still the party of the majority. Other than that, it is hard to convince even a child that your argument holds water.
