?What the hell" happened is what we are discussing today. Why such a resounding failure
The failure came because the communist higher organs of the parties became an incubator for the privileged few. To them, all the privileges starting from western wares to villas, were dispensed by the decision of the central buraecracy of the party. Goods that were supposed to be produced by the economic policy through the so-called public ownership of means of production and made available to the proletariate were sold in shops only accessible to the communist elite. Much of the resources that was supposed to be available for production of goods were wasted in empty prestigeous projects like space programs and unsustainable armed race with the west
Much of the ideas in the communist manifesto were neglected and were adopted by the western European socialist parties, like the British Labor Party, and given human face, leading to what we call today as the welfare state. Again the lack of democracy in the parties'ranks because of the monster called democratic centralism, led to the emergence of lunny leadership like Stalin, who wasted no time in murdering millions of the very masses the party was supposed to serve.
As to the Chinese experiments it never went beyond cult worship in form of Mao. Thank god ,after the cultural revolution the new communist leadersip realized that Maoism was taking them nowhere, but ultimate ruin to the Chinese society. As to the third world communist parties, they became caricatures of their local environments. Some espousing Arab nationalism like in the case of Sudan communist party
