when we talk about the duties and responsibilities of the state and government in Sudan we do that because the state and government control both power and wealth.
it is not just a wish to blame everything on government. all through the modern history of sudan the state has grown at the expense of people and their civil and social organisations. and at the expense of their freedoms and initiatives.
the state controls or tries to control you from the sugar you put in your tea to the thoughts in your minds or the clothes you wear, to the curiculum to be taught. the state can prevent you from travelling. they can arrest you and detain you without any charge and hold you for indefinite periods of time.
in your name they can borrow billions of dollars and spend it as they wish. they are not accountable to anybody. in a word, under totalitarian regimes, like the present one, the state is a tool of repression and embezzlement of public wealth.
so when people rise against oppression and for their very existence they do so in the belief that a democratically elected and accountable government will make an effort to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
it is true that our political parties need structural changes to befit the 21st century and to catch up with the aspirations and entitlements of the ordinary people like you and me. but this change can only take place within the democratic system in the country.
these are the realities of sudan. wishful thinking can be an exit visa from reality to nowhere!
thank you Azza and thanks to ustaz Abu garjah. let us hear more views.
