AFRICA | Police Fire Tear Gas on Sudanese Protesters Police Fire Tear Gas on Sudanese Protesters By Reuters Dec. 21, 2018
KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudanese police fired tear gas on Friday at demonstrators in two cities who are angry over rising prices and a nationwide cash shortage, among other issues.
The protests, which began after noon prayers in Omdurman and Atbara, were smaller than those on Thursday, when at least eight people were killed as thousands took to the streets, some calling for the overthrow of Sudan’s longtime president, Omar al-Bashir.
At least one protester was killed Friday in the northern city of Atbara, the security chief there said.
A government spokesman blamed “infiltrators” for derailing peaceful demonstrations and turning them into “subversive activity.” The protests, among the biggest the country has seen in five years, could threaten moves to change the Sudanese Constitution and could allow Mr. Bashir to remain in power into a fourth decade. Turmoil has been deepening within Sudan, a nation of 40 million people that slid into economic crisis after it lost three-quarters of its oil output — the main source of its foreign currency — when the south seceded in 2011.
Small, brief protests also took place across at least eight neighborhoods in the capital, Khartoum, on Friday, witnesses said Police had stepped up their presence outside Khartoum’s main mosques ahead of Friday’s anticipated demonstrations. Hundreds of Sudanese web users reported issues with internet access, particularly on social networks like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, late Thursday and into Friday.
Many Sudanese think the government may be trying to stall protests. Some who were able to gain access using VPNs called for the demonstrations to continue.
Public anger has been building over price increases, inflation and other economic hardships, including a doubling in the cost of bread this year and limits on bank withdrawals. Long lines continued to stretch outside of ATMs and bakeries in Khartoum early Friday The Education Ministry said on Friday that it was shutting schools and kindergartens in Khartoum “for the safety of the children.
