The United Nations is wary of ongoing ethnic violence and warned that history may repeat itself in South Sudan.
Ethnic cleansing has been increasing in the South Sudan, U.N. commissioners warned on Wednesday. Amid ongoing ethnic violence and starvation, observers cautioned that the country is on a dangerous path to becoming a modern-day genocide, similar to what happened in Rwanda in the early 1990s.

"There is already a steady process of ethnic cleansing under way in several areas of South Sudan using starvation, gang rape and the burning of villages," said Yasmin Sooka, Chairperson of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan.
During a 10 day observation mission, the commission spoke to victims of atrocities, rape and violence where many tribes appeared intent on revenge against other tribes. Many said that the situation had “already reached a point of no return.”
The commission was also concerned that fighting would increase with the onset of the dry season, in a country that already faces problems food shortages and hunger. The commissioner stated that there were 91 recorded incidents of ethnic attacks in November alone.
"The stage is being set for a repeat of what happened in Rwanda and the international community is under an obligation to prevent it," Sooka warned during a press conference in the capital Juba.
“Any sense of national identity is crumbling and tribal identity is taking over," Sooka added. "Given this country is home to 64 tribes this offers a multitude of fault lines along which this nation can fracture."
