Schmeichel in shock Peter Schmeichel admits he was caught off-guard by Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to retire as Manchester United manager at the end of the 2012/13 season. The Reds boss made the shock announcement on Wednesday morning and will take charge of his final game against West Brom on 19 May, before adopting a new role as a club ambassador and director next campaign. When asked if he saw the decision coming, former Reds goalkeeper Schmeichel explained how the news has left him saddened, particularly after this term’s title triumph. “I am shocked and I just can’t make sense of the timing,” Peter said. “This has come as an absolute bombshell; I really don’t know what to make of it. I am sad and disappointed. I was really happy with what we have done this season, bringing the Premier League trophy home, so I am shocked. However, the legendary Dane, who famously captained United to UEFA Champions League glory during his final outing in 1999, was keen to praise his former boss and shed some light on exactly why he is regarded as the greatest of all-time. “The thing about Sir Alex is that for 95% of the player she has brought in over the 27 years, he has scouted them all for a long time,” Peter explained. “It is not just about what you do on the pitch, it is also about your personality and how you handle situations surrounding football, like the media. “How a player is with the public and stuff like that is very important to him. He wants the players to understand that everybody wants a piece of Manchester United. He wants the players to and#225;and#211;and#237;and#209; |

Quote: "The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly," said Ferguson.
"It is the right time."
Ferguson's last game in charge will be at West Brom on May 19 and he will join the club's football board.
Read his full statement here:
"The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.
"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.
"Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.
"Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.
"I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.
"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.
"In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.
"Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy Chief Executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.
"To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."

Mission statement: Alex Ferguson said he wanted to knock Liverpool off their perch when he took over in 1986
More famously, Ferguson said he wanted to knock Liverpool ‘right off their f***ing perch’ and Dennis Wise could ‘start a row in an empty house’. Then there’s ‘squeaky-bum time’ when the season gets a bit ‘tickly’, and the occasion he said he would not sell Real Madrid ‘a virus’… shortly before United pocketed £80million for selling Cristiano Ronaldo to the Spanish side.
And, of course, the most apt comment of them all after the 1999 Champions League final: ‘Football. Bloody hell.’ Quite.
