صور للمشاركين في فعاليات الورشة السنوية الخامسة Transformational Leadership Workshop Report The Institute for Sustainable Peace held its 5th Annual Transformational Leadership Workshop from June 10-18 in the beautiful and inspiring Estes Park, Colorado. This year’s workshop focused on addressing the question, “So What Does Peace Mean?” Over 25 Sudanese participants, from across Sudan and the Diaspora as well as across age, occupation, and gender, gathered together for a week of intense engagement and visioning for sustainable peace in Sudan. Amidst daily reports of fighting and atrocities in the Sudan, hope remained strong among such a diverse group of individuals that peace could be achieved The participants spent time not only addressing what peace means, but also becoming equipped with the tools of generative dialogue and strategic planning. They engaged in exercises meant to stretch their minds, hearts, and wills. In addition, Ballard Pritchett and ISP Senior Fellows Peter Bishop and Mark Chupp led various sessions, ranging from scenario forecasting to appreciative inquiry. Participants spent the final days of the workshop utilizing these skills to create and map out projects for sustainable peace that will then be transferred to the Sudan. The ISP is already at work envisioning what the next workshop will encompass and how to best facilitate equipping others with the necessary tools and processes to build sustainable peace. Walking the Path of Peace
Leaders from all regions of Sudan are coming to The Institute's 4th Annual Leadership Development Workshop entitled "Walking the Path of Peace."
Participants will have the opportunity to learn leadership principles and skills that are essential to transforming a culture of violence into a culture of peace, including interpersonal conflict management and principled negotiation skills developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project. They will learn to constructively engage with others across regional, ethnic, tribal and political differences, and to develop win-win solutions across these divisions. There will be both informal and facilitated dialogues, as well as working sessions to generate ideas and initiatives to undertake upon their return home.
Participants will include leaders from the Sudanese diaspora as well as U.S. participants interested in Sudan or eager to learn first hand about the processes and work of The Institute. This is a unique opportunity for scholars and graduate students to experience conflict transformation with leaders of groups who have been locked in intractable conflict.
The workshop will be held from September 17 - 26, 2010 at the YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain Ranch facility near Winter Park, Colorado ________ خالص الود MAKKI MAKKI

The third annual leadership development workshop 2009
2009 Leadership Development Workshop The third annual leadership development workshop gathered 32 participants, among them 24 leaders from Sudanese communities. Among the participants were the president and secretary of the Youth League of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, who flew in from South Sudan to participate in our annual workshop. Our workshop assembled an extremely diverse group of Sudanese, representing different religions, ethic groups, and regions. Participants were originally from South Sudan, Darfur, Nuba Mountains, and Northern Nubia. They came from different generations, with ages ranging from 20 to 40. The average age was 28. Our participants back home are undergraduate or graduate students, peace activists, educators, college professors, social workers, community leaders, biologists, human right actives, computer scientists, members of the National Guard, models, journalists, computer designers, political leaders, directors of non-profit organizations and nurses. Participants were able to overcome these divisions to identify opportunities for collaboration and synergy among the Sudanese Diaspora, focusing on how to engage in more dialogue, develop conflict manage skills, and build sustainable peace while meeting the challenges of globalization. Through the help of our outstanding senior fellows, participants learned the following skills:
We were privileged to have outstanding groups of speakers/mentors from multiple disciplines: - Mr. Randall Butler. Executive Director of The Institute for Sustainable Peace - Dr. Mark G. Chupp. Visiting Assistant Professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences of Case Western Reserve University - Mr. Jean Marie Ngendayaho. Visiting Scholar in Residence at Texas Lutheran University; former Foreign Minister and Member of Parliament in Burundi - Mrs. Shannon Sedgwick Davis. Partner at Bridgeway Foundation Capital Management Inc. - Dr. Richard Stoll. Professor of Political Science at Rice University - Mr. Mustafa Tameez. Principal of one of Houston’s Leading public affairs firms. Has served as advisor to Congressmen and state legislatures - Dr. Robert Krueger. Former U.S. Senator and Ambassador to Burundi - Ms. Ada Edwards. Three term Houston city council member and Deputy Chief off Staff for Neighborhood in Mayor Bill White’s office, civil rights and anti – apartheid activist
Each speaker invested a minimum of three days in the workshop and spent considerable time in significant one-one-one conversations with the participants.
At the end of the workshop we invited each participant to envision sustainable peace in Sudan 2013. Participants’ visions clustered around five different strategies for achieving peace and unity. We divided participants into groups according to their vision. In these groups, participants developed concrete action plans which they continue to work on. The groups were:
• Education group, which focused on building schools in Sudan • Election group centered on helping people in the Sudanese Diaspora vote in the upcoming Sudanese elections • Food security group aimed at improving agricultural enterprise in Sudan • Healthcare group which seeks to provide equal access to health care in Sudan • Institute for Sustainable Peace in Sudan group, hoping to offer a similar, Sudanese-led workshop inside Sudan • Repatriation of Sudan group focused on efforts that need to be undertaken in Sudan before refugees can return home.
Here is some of the feedback from those who participated in the workshop:
‘‘This workshop had 3 effects on me. It reestablished the focus in my life. This workshop has expanded my perspective to the world. And I think I’m in a better position to understand how the world is. And I think that no matter what we go through as Sudanese, we should always keep our eyes open and hearts open for unity, love, respect. But the most important thing is we need to stay active and work for our country. I feel that I’m better equipped to lead…”
“If there is anything that has emerged from this workshop, it is our determination, commitment to work and provide and to give hope to those who have no hope on this globe.”
“I’ve never really been that close to people from South Sudan or North Sudan…This is going to lead me to a better future, a better role. This is going to help me help others.” Mentors had this to say about this year’s participants: “I’ve been very impressed with the caliber of leadership, the energy, the passion and vision for peace that resides in the hearts of these young adults from Sudan.” “The Sudanese Diaspora is a force for peace working here in this country.” “I go away encourage, energized and excited about the future of Sudan.” As we move away from the workshop experience, The Institute for Sustainable Peace continues to build capacity in these leaders, helping them stay connected with one another, and reaching out to attract even more community leaders, non-profit organizations, students, political leaders and business people to join us in making our vision of sustainable peace in Sudan a reality. ____________________ جبال الروكي : كلورادو _ تحتضن المؤتمر الثالث _ لت...ت شباب السودان (صور) __________

فعاليات الورشة السنوية الثاني 2008 Second annual Leadership Development Workshop
2008 Leadership Development Workshop
Our second annual Leadership Development Workshop attracted 32 participants including 21 leaders and activists from Sudan who are living and working in the United States where they came to escape political persecution and violence. We were also pleased to welcome the president of the Youth League of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement, who flew all the way from Juba in Southern Sudan to participate. Not only did the participants come from diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds, they also came from different generations. Several were in their 30s and 40s and their average age was 29.
Back home, the participants are college and graduate students, peace activists, educators, college professors, executives in nonprofit organizations, social entrepreneurs, a lieutenant in the Coast Guard, journalists, computer scientists, engineers, biologists and political leaders. Even among the Sudanese, there was much diversity, as they originally came to the U.S. from the north of Sudan, Darfur and southern Sudan.
Overcoming the divisions that many in the world think of as insurmountable, we were able to build a “relational container” that could hold all the differences among the participants. Over the course of our seven days together, with the help of our outstanding Senior Fellows, we engaged in a more civil discourse and built a dialogue around such questions as:
• What skills and qualities will leaders of the future need in order to build sustainable peace? • What is sustainable peace and what does it look like? • What can we do in our own backyards to begin working toward sustainable peace in the next year? • How can we influence the institutions or companies of which we are a part to work together for the common good while at the same time creating profits and value for our constituents? We were privileged to have an outstanding group of speakers/mentors from multiple disciplines: - Dr. Andrea Bartoli, Founding Director, CICR at Columbia University and Drucie French Cumbie Chair of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution - Mrs. Kathleen Krueger, city council member in New Braunfels, Texas - Dr. Robert Krueger, former U.S. Senator and Ambassador to Burundi - Mr. John Montgomery, founder Bridgeway Capital Management - Dr. Herman Detering, scholar, entrepreneur, and “natural horseman” - John Masuku, radio journalist and reform activist in Zimbabwe - Dr. Guy Burgess, professor at the University of Colorado and director of BeyondIntractability.org - Ms. Ada Edwards, civil rights and anti-apartheid activist, three term Houston city council member and Deputy Chief of Staff for Neighborhoods in Mayor Bill White’s office - Dorian Ducka, International Secretary of one of the main political parties in Albania and activist for reform - Randall Butler, Executive Director of The Institute for Sustainable Peace Each speaker invested a minimum of three days in the workshop and spent considerable time in significant conversation with the other participants.
At the end of the workshop, we invited each individual participant to commit to specific actions that he or she could take in the next 30 days to begin working towards sustainable peace in his or her own sphere of influence. Here some of the observations from those who came to the workshop: “It has been hard to just sit still and fully reflect on all that has happened over the week I spent in Estes Park, but still, the language of mental models, and committed community keeps creeping into my vocabulary...I miss everyone tremendously. I am so excited about working with you in the future…” “I'm writing to encourage each of you - you are all incredible people! I am so glad I got to become friends with you each! Let's really stay faithful to each other and keep each other accountable to making changes. I'm SO excited to hear each of your stories as you pursue the goals you set these past few days. I miss you all and I truly do believe the world can change in the next 29 days.” We are now in conversations that could lead to a similar Leadership Development Workshop in Sudan. Thank you for making this kind of life changing work possible! _______________ MAKKI MAKKI

فعاليات الورشة السنوية الاولي 2007 2007 The first Annual Leadership Development Workshop
Why the Institute for Sustainable Peace Our work with the Sudanese grew out of one fortuitous conversation at a STAND anti-genocide conference at Berkeley in the spring of 2007. It was there that Randy Butler met Esther Sprague, dedicated activist for the Sudanese, and Mamer Ajak, one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan” and a leader in the Sudanese Diaspora. The following week, Esther called Randy to ask whether he could design a project for the Sudanese like the one he helped lead in the Balkans. Butler invited her to bring some Sudanese to our first Leadership Development Workshop (LDW) in June 2007 in Estes Park, Colorado. She did - three from Northern Sudan and three from Southern Sudan came and experienced real reconciliation.
From those first six individuals, the circle has expanded and we have developed deep relationships with more than fifty potential change agents and leaders from all regions of Sudan and all sectors of society. As a result, in the preparation for our 4th Annual LDW, 45+ leaders living and working in Sudan applied to come to Colorado to participate in the workshop. The leaders include human rights activists, journalists, leaders of NGO’s, political and even rebel leaders. During his trip to Sudan in October 2009, the leader of a large political party told Butler, “While we appreciate their good work, the Europeans and Americans working in Sudan have confused security and humanitarian aid with peace building. The Institute for Sustainable Peace has outlined a project that would bring real peace building.“ Having been given this opportunity to contribute to conflict transformation in Sudan, we must step up to serve.
The Institute is proud of the work it has achieved thus far in Sudan
