The Ebony Center for Cultural Diversity and Peace Mission Statement The break-up of the Sudan into two states has inevitably created new facts and realities, with major political, social and economic ramifications. The people who used to identify themselves as Sudanese are now either Northern or Southern Sudanese. What used to be the common identity for those people is further challenged by geographical boundaries and sharp disputes over a large array of substantial issues. However, despite the past grievances, inequality and the current challenges, there has been a shared vision in a number of areas. Culture and arts are some of those areas. The break-up of the country has generated a pressing and urgent need to keep this vision alive. The Ebony Center for Cultural Diversity and Peace is an attempt to maintain and strength this shared vision. Its message is peace, co-existence, and maintaining and strengthening cultural ties between Sudanese regions. Its aim is to bring together all the Sudanese both inside and outside their countries, as well as other nationalities interested in Sudanese culture and arts. The objective is to engage in cultural and artistic efforts to keep some bridges open between the people of the two countries. Thus, the Center aims essentially to break the new political boundaries so as to maintain the cultural links and heritage of the Sudanese people. While it is headquartered in Washington DC in the United States of America, the purpose of the Center is to achieve the intellectual aspirations of all the Sudanese, at home and abroad. To assist in achieving this objective, we will aim to establish a branch in Khartoum to contribute in spreading the message of Ebony of peace, co-existence, and maintaining and strengthening Sudanese cultural ties. The Center will be a space for researchers, writers, poets, novelists, painters, singers and artists to assist in the dissemination of culture among all Sudanese, and help stimulate the gifted men and women develop their talents and intellectual resources. To attain this objective, the Center will be a meeting point for those ideas and talents through conferences, workshops, seminars and newsletters. We plan to inaugurate the Center in July 2012 by holding the first Sudanese Cultural Festival in the USA. This festival will be held under the banner of peaceful co-existence, tolerance, and democratic values, and will aim at reflecting Sudan’s cultural diversity and richness. It will also aim at reflecting the positive aspects of the long history of struggle for Sudanese co-existence. In so doing, the Center will strive to learn from the experience of other nations, particularly the USA, where diversity has been a source of strength. In this, the Center aims to be a catalyst for better understanding and closer ties among Sudanese regions. We call on all the Sudanese intellectual and artists to be generous with ideas and suggestions for attaining the objectives of the Center, and to participate in its activities and plans so we can achieve peaceful co-existence, and continued cultural ties and relationships.
