Quote: 42 mins ago NAIROBI, Kenya – A spokesman for Southern Sudan's military says troops from northern Sudan tried to cross a symbolic river between north and south Sudan in the disputed Abyei region and the two forces clashed.
Col. Philip Aguer says the northern troops tried to cross what southerners refer to as the Kiir River on Wednesday, and a clash broke out. Aguer says the northern forces returned to Abyei town. Aguer says there were casualties but he didn't immediately know how many.
The fighting in the border region of Abyei comes as air bombardments have taken place in the north-south border region of South Kordofan. Southern Sudan secedes from the north on July 9. Violence has flared in the run-up to the independence declaration. |
