I congratulate the people of Southern Sudan on the announcement of the referendum result, which signifies an overwhelming vote for secession of Southern Sudan, hence a birth of a sovereign state. At the same time, it is heartbreaking to see the largest country in Africa, the home of the oldest African civilization, be split in two due to the short-sightedness of the ruling class, or classes, and not be able to do anything about it. The numerous ruling elites insist on adopting a conservative form of Islam in a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and diverse country like Sudan. They continuously ignore the Sudanese people’s legitimate aspirations of dignity, development, and democracy. Moreover, they value everything coming from the Arab world, despise our deep African heritage and roots, and madly continue wiping out any sign of African civilization that ever existed in present day Sudan. The result is splitting the beloved land into many parts. As Dr. Nada rightfully wrote, let us forever denounce Bashir and his party for ripping our country apart. Regards,
Mohamed G. Salim
