PDF: Yam Molecular Geneticist (Ref: PDF - YMG 02/07)
Background:
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), with headquarters in Ibadan Nigeria invites applications for a Yam Molecular Geneticist (Postdoctoral Fellow).
IITA is an Africa-based international research-for-development organization, established in 1967, and governed by a board of trustees. Our vision is to be one of Africa ’s leading research partners in finding solutions for hunger and poverty. We have more than 100 international scientists and more than 900 nationally recruited staff based in various IITA stations across Africa . This network of scientists is dedicated to the development of technologies that reduce producer and consumer risk, increase local production, and generate wealth. We are supported primarily by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR, www.cgiar.org.
Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for generating molecular markers in yams (Dioscorea species) and identifying those associated with desirable traits (especially disease resistance) in collaboration with other scientists in IITA, other advanced research institutes and national research systems.
Duty Station:
IITA Headquarters in Ibadan , Nigeria .
Qualifications:
Recent PhD in molecular genetics.
Hands-on experience in the use of molecular markers for genetic mapping especially of polyploidy crops
Proficiency with computers, including knowledge of statistical data software, linkage and QTL mapping software, spreadsheets and word-processing, as well as willingness and ability to learn further as necessary. Ability to present scientific material in a professional and attractive manner.
Strong scientific writing skills. Excellent command of written and verbal English. Competencies with French language preferred.
Ability to work effectively under pressure, meets deadlines, analyze and solve problems, and maintain a high degree of judgment especially when confronted with obstacles or difficult work environments.
Must be able to work in collaboration with other departments, field stations, organizational partners, and other constituents associated with IITA.
Desirable Qualifications:
Experience working within multidisciplinary and culturally diverse environments.
Working knowledge of Sub-Saharan African.

Information:
Initial appointment is for two years. IITA offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
