Quote: CARAVANAMANI 2010 Pan-African Peace Caravan Team Travelling Through Sudan This Week On 7.-9. of April 2010, the peace caravan project on climate conflict, “Caravanamani”, will visit Khartoum on its way from Germany to the Football World Cup in South Africa. Their mission is to connect the regions on their way to the FIFA World Cup 2010 TM by means of football and arts, while using these tools at the same time to raise awareness on peacebuilding, social inclusion and the relation between climate change and conflict. The four Caravanamani participants who are expected to reach Khartoum from Wadi Halfa on the 7th of April, are Pascasie Uwitonze, from Rwandan “Football for Peace” NGO Esperance, Doudou Kalala, expert on climate conflict, from DR Congo, Geresom Mayanja dramatist who uses theater for life, from Uganda, and Cecilia Lubanga, teacher from Kenya. The group started on 17th March 2010 from Berlin, Germany, met with football related youth groups in Ostfildern, with refugees in Italy and Malta, NGOs in Cairo and a football team in Asuan, Egypt. From Khartoum, the route will lead them to Addis-Ababa, the climate conflict shaken region of Marsabit, Kenya, Jinja, Uganda, and Kigali, Rwanda. In June they proceed to South Africa from there. On their program in Khartoum are a drama workshop on environment, nonviolence and diversity with “Sudanese Center for Theatre Research, Culture and Development” (SCTR), an exchange meeting on peace and climate conflict with “Sudanese Organisation for Nonviolence and Development” (SONAD), a tree planting action (tbc), and a “Caravanamani Celebration”, featuring the dramatists of SCTR and musicians of Sudan University and UNESCO Guitar Friends Club. Caravanamani is funded by Civil Peace Service of DED (German Development Service). In addition, the Ministry of Culture of Khartoum State supports the program in Khartoum.
Background of Caravanamani: In 2004 a group of some 50 people travelled the countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo over a three weeks period on a peace mission. The group called itself "CARAVANAMANI", which means " PEACE TRAVEL", and comprised representatives from an international association of non-governmental organisations, actors, artist, dancers and football players. Five years later, on 8th March 2009, the Rwandan capital-Kigali with ESPERANCE organisation served as starting point for a new peace Caravanamani designed to travel the Great Lakes Region to end it on 29th March 2009 at Kimisagara Youth Center (KYC) where ESPERANCE has its office. On its way it was going to embed the countries of Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Caravanamani conveyed a dual mission: it was animating the idea of an African FIFA confederations Cup 2009TM and FIFA World Cup 2010TM by carrying the South African enthusiasm to these countries. As the same time Caravanamani used football as a tool for peace building and social inclusion in Africa. This year, the mission is broadened both geographically and by adding the issue of climate change and conflict in Africa to its focal themes.
