Thanks all of you for the insightful inputs on this critical issue. Male - female relation in Sudan is governed by cultural norms that should be respected. These cultural norms are felexible and difer greatly from both African and Arab cultural values. A decent relation between a single man and a single woman is well accepted by the society in general and many famillies in particular. The relation shouldn't exceed the limits set by the society and culture. As we know Sudanese culture is a mix of indeginous African cultures and the Arab culture and that makes it unique to this land. Most familly allow and encourage these decent relationships in diferent ways...such as Sun set tea, wedding parties, co-education in college...etc. Most of young men in a village or a city quarter know about these relationship and they usually chat about them. These pre-marital decent relationships most of the time are well known . Sometimes a girl loves someone but marries someone else. The issue isn't about love but about capablity and affordablity. Those ready-to-marry young men know in advance that their nominated wife-to-be had somewhat engaged in a relationship when she was at intermediate or high school or college. What concerns a young man isn't the past decent relationships but the unethically and culturally unacceptable past behaviour. Why is he concerned about it?. Simply because her previous misbehaviour in accordance with the cultural ethics is above his social status as a loyal member of the society to tolerate it. If he does he would have no place in that society and he would be disgraced, humilated and eventually isolated.
Our culture is more tolerent to decent relationships between men and unmarried women that may include writting, phoning, visiting at presence of family and meeting in public places. As well the culture is intolerent if the relationship breaks the ethical code and bypassed the limits.
I agree that our culture favors man over woman in this respect..which is a mistake. Men are equally obliged to respect the values and morals of the society and they should equally be panished and disgraced when they break the ethical code.
If the disgraceful past is to be forgotten and tolerated as some of you advocate, many will intentionally break the common laws and ethics of the society. This is in turn leads to the weakening and unefficency of the ethical code. Just immagine a society without an ethical code.
