Quote: The office of the president, or perhaps the president himself, directly contacted and persuaded Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to cancel his plans to attend a meeting in Istanbul, top Turkish diplomats said Monday.
Al-Bashir, the target of an international arrest warrant over alleged war crimes, had planned to attend the Istanbul meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic Cooperation, or COMCEC, of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, or OIC.
Officially, the diplomats said, the Sudanese president called Turkish President Abdullah Gül and apologized that due to key political negotiations in Khartoum that required his personal presence, he would not be able to attend the 25th anniversary meeting of COMCEC, chaired by Turkey.
Unofficially, however, senior Turkish diplomatic sources said President Gül was “relieved” by al-Bashir’s agreeing to persuasive efforts by the Turkish president to cancel his planned trip to Istanbul. |
